Are the screws that hold throttle butterflies in place just normal countersunk machine screws with flared ends? Specifically, can I just remove and replace them myself with normal screws, or do I need specific screws?

They are normal screws which have been 'staked' on the threaded end to prevent them coming out. You can re-use them, but you should stake them again afterwards.

First fit all your butterflies with the screws lightly snugged. Wind off the idle screw so they can shut fully and 'snap' the throttle a time or two with your fingers to centralise the blades in the bored, now tighten the screws.

If you have a bench vice, put a heavy rod like a socket extension bar in the vice pointing upwards. To stake the screws, have someone hold the throttle bodies so that the head of a screw rests flat onto the rod you have pointing up out of the vice jaws. This will back up the screw and stop you bending the shaft. Now take a small cold chisel and a small hammer and use the chisel three times to put a star-shaped stake on the end of each screw. Alternatively you might use a centre punch but whatever you do make sure you do it gently so you don't split the end of the screw.

Google 'staking a bolt' for ideas.

Thanks. I've freed the throttle action up enough for me to try refitting the carbs for now, although there's every chance I'll be doing what you've suggested before too long, if it doesn't get any better.
