What kind of welding are you looking at getting in to? I taught myself to MIG weld with a second hand Cebora Pocket MIG and Auto Mask to a pretty good DIY standard just by watching youtube videos and playing about with bits of scrap.

Chinese DC TIG setup will get you started for maybe the same outlay as a week long course and should at least last as long.

If you want to earn a living from it then possibly ignore the above Laughing

+1 for cheap welder and Youtube.

I think the the entry level Clarke MIG welders get good reviews on the mig-welding forums.

Don't waste your time with flux core.

10-4 to that.

Given the option again, I would still go for a second hand branded welder, I gave 70 ponds for the Cebora, add 30 for an auto mask (essential IMO) and around 80 for a pub bottle and reg (don't bother with BOC etc mixes for a start, you won't get the benefit) tenners worth of 0.6 and 0.8 wire and tips and you're all set (apart from a grinder and a selection of disks if you don't have them already).

Arc welders are car boot fodder, I picked up a little 115A Cebora for 15 quid with all the leads and a few rods, harder to learn than mig but I've found it very useful for nobbing brackets and tools together in purely functional situations.

Edit: Yes, flux core is shit unless circumstance relies on it, avoid at all costs.

Even if you do a course you will be buying a welder eventually. Might as well buy one anyway and try the Youtube route.

ChuckE2009 has some good videos to get you started, and some good project ideas.

weldingtipsandtricks has some good more detailed videos.

I have taught a few friends how to weld MIG or better TIG is repetitively easy
I you know a local welder or are in range of south London I teach you am hour with instruction and a good set up will see you away

I recommend read one of the welders text books and reading one of the welding forums
