Hi, bit of an amateur at this whole thing so hopefully someone can set me straight.

I picked up a CB500 twin the other day (first bike), as far as I can tell it's a pretty decent bike. The motor fires, purrs and pulls, and doesn't smoke at all. If I let the revs drop though in gear it starts to sound very clattery, like a bag of spanners or a old cement mixer.

I don't know, maybe I'm just doing it wrong and I just need to stop riding it like a pillock and feed it some revs?

What's happy revs for a bike? should I not be letting it drop down to 2500-3000?

Hard to say without actually hearing it because it could be extreme or just normal - but with that said, parallel twins do tend to get lumpy and awful sounding at low RPM so it wouldn't be a total shocker if it was just fine and perfectly normal.

It's a Honda their clutches rattle.

It is exacerbated at low revs. I ignored this happily for years on my Hondas.

Higher idle revs makes it go away.

Sure it isn't the chain flapping around?. I know mine seems to be finicky that you're in the right gear (as in not too high) for example at a junction.

I checked the chain tension, it seems about what it should be.

Hopefully it is just a Honda thing. I'll give it more revs / learn to change down. I'm used to driving a diesel cage. Rolling Eyes

Ta!

The cb500 in my experience hasn't much in the way of torque. So gear changing required to make best use of engine.

For torque I'd recommend a st1100. I am sure there are other choices.
