After giving up the retro peugeot I've decided to buy a new (used) bike. I'm a bit of a hobbit at only 171cm/5' 8", so will be looking at 53cm frame I believe.

Any recommendations on brands/models to bung into an ebay search. Not too bothered on getting something high end as it will be mostly used for commuting, but also a bit of weekend fun. Only real thing I'm looking for is a wheelset with cartridge bearings not cups/cones. I'm not against piecing components together if I can get a better deal but have a feeling that complete would be better value for money.

Out of interest have you tried one of those places that recycles old cycles?

putting components together will always cost more if you are after a cheap bike. Where it is beneficial is when you go into high end bikes. It can be cheaper to build a high end bike than buying it.

all depends on what your budget is. Old carrera vanquish can be picked up for 150-180. 9 speed tiagra, carbon fork. Decent 10-10.5 kg bike.

Giant Defy 3, 4, 5?

There's a place near me specialising in Triathlon stuff and they sell bikes on that have been rented by Triathletes for a season. Pretty cheap way of getting a reasonable ride. Have a google for TriUK.

Keep an eye on local Facebook lists and the like and just be patient. Having money on hand at the right time can net you great deals.

look for decathlon triban 3. Or an old vanquish. Or have a look at bikeradar classifieds. Or look for even a carrera tdf, either with microshift shifters or the new one with claris. Like Seb said, keep the cash ready, keep an eye out and be patient. When something good comes up it is usually snapped up pretty fast.

8/9 speed may be considered pretty much obsolete but it is still has more than good enough gear ratio for average rider. Plus its all about the engine unless you are climbing ventoux alpe d'huez or zoncolan then a lighter 6.8kg bike with latest components helps.

got one. Found something very local to me on ebay. Specialzed Allez elite. It's a little more expensive that what I was looking to pay but still a good deal. Everything looks in good condition and has carbon forks with ally frame with tiagra groupset.

will post pictures after I've picked it up on friday.
