Well i got my secondhand engine the other day, i bought it off a guy who races Hornets and was going to break it for parts, he said he bought it a year ago from a breaker and was apparently a 'Runner. He didn't have any documents or any History of the engine, what do you expect for £180.

What i want to do is strip my current engine, and rebuild it with the crankcase off of the engine i have just bought. I was just wondering how much do you reckon it would cost to do this?. Im was thinking of getting my local dealer to do it, but no doubt they would charge a fortune, and don't know if they would want to rebuild it with secondhand parts.

So any guesses what the labour price would be?, i think the gasket set is going to cost £75.

Or should i just chuck the s/h engine in and hope it works.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

It is stolen and for the saving you made buying this engine you will have to pay back as much if not more to get it rebuilt as a legit enginge would have cost. Sad Not good to buy anything without paperwork because some poor sod has lost his bike, at the very least it is legit and knackered.

Good luck. Thumbs Up

Yea..., no doubt out of a crash damaged bike. The crankcase is in perfect condition, the reason i bought the engine, to /Break/ it and use the parts i need. I didn't ask the reason for it being in the breakers Rolling Eyes , just how much it would cost to strip both the engines and rebuild my one with the new crankcase.

All the engine numbers are still on the bike, and i have the numbers of the 'Racing team i bought it off, so i personally don't think it is stolen.
Plus i was quoted £1400 for a new crankcase from Honda, and £400 to fit it.

You would probably be looking at at least 10 hours labour.

So at say a conservative £30 per hour, that's £300.

Then add VAT.

And hope they do it right Confused.

Probably cheaper and less hassle just to use that or find another second hand engine that works. Maybe then try and fix it yourself as an 'exercise'... if it goes wrong you can sell the bits left over, if it works you sell it as one and re-coup your money.

Did you only want the crankCASES?
Or did you mean the crankshaft itself?

I didn't mean buy a crankcase off Honda, I meant buy a secondhand engine with paperwork which you could have probably got for around £400.

This would have saved you money in the long run because you've got to get the crankcases swapped over yet.

A lot of these so called 'race teams' are using stolen stuff and wouldn't have a problem with passing it on to you.

This BCF stripdown idea may not be such a bad one!

Laura & Poppy, Dr Nick & Hornet.

Anyone else for the list?

If the only damage is the broken sprocket cover lugs then pull the motor and haul it down to a local professional welding outfit (that can TIG weld aluminium) Make sure you tell them in advance that its a thin wall casting. Ask them to weld up the lugs into blobs of ally. File back the tops flush with the sprocket housing, drill and tap new bolt holes. The welding shouldn`t cost more than £50.00 and even if you have to buy a tap and die kit to re do the holes the total bill should be under £100.

Otherwise just install the new motor and see what happens, if its ok then run with it, if it isn`t you can still build up a motor out of the two you have. You would need a top end gasket set (best part of £100.00) plus an oil and filter change. Do you have the tools needed for major engine work & are you interested in doing it? if you don`t have the tools that would add £150-200 but you would have the tools for life. Thumbs Up
