Got a pair of ZZR wheels that I'm stripping for powdercoating and a few things I'm wondering?

When stripping them off what should I keep hold of for re-fitting and what should I replace?

Was thinking I'd replace the wheel bearings incase I damage them taking them out and I don't know the condition of the ones in there.

Should I replace the cush drive?

Sprocket will be taken from wheels currently on bike, discs also (may replace)

What needs to be masked when powdercoating? I presume the threads but do any surfaces need to be?

Before you do anything check that the wheels themselves are in good order and not buckled or have and dents or dings. No point in doing any work on slagged wheels.
If they are within tollerances check the things I've mentioned below and anything else you can think of.

For what they cost it doesn't make sense to reuse bearings. Not sure
about those wheels but some also have a dust cove over the bearing, if they look dodgy then replace.
Also makes sense to check and spacers for wear and replace if needed. Cut out the air valves and replace when you (or someone else) fits the tyres.

If you can't work out if the cush drive is ok for yourself then maybe post a picture on here or take it to someone that can tell and ask them.
No point in changing the cush if it's perfectly usable though they aren't too expensive to buy new.

Any decent coating firm will mask up and have bungs to stick in holes but might be worth asking.

Thumbs Up

Hi

Wheel bearings are not likely to appreciate being smacked out of the wheel so definitely replace them. Watch out on the ZZR as on one side there is nothing to stop you knocking the bearing into the middle of the wheel.

All the best

Thanks guys,

Was planning on replacing bearings and dust seals anyway,

Had never seen a cush drive before taking this one apart, simple but effective really isn't it?

Am I able to powder coat the cush-drive housing to complete the effect or am I best not doing?

Need to get some spring-clip pliers before attempting to pop the bearings out.

Some lumps of rubber loosely joined together that sit between the sprocket carrier and the wheel to provide some shock absorbtion in the transmission

All the best
