Not the first time this kind of thing has been discussed on BCF. I guess it's not a bad idea, and agree that whether I would use them or not depends on what you pay. Chain and lock look a bit weak though. All you'd have to do is turn up in something (van, pick-up) that looks like it's from a garage and you'd be through those in no time, and no one would bat an eyelid. But then maybe as good as what security I'd normally actually carry with me.

So on balance, I'd give that the Thumbs Up

Better than nothing, just. That chain is a bit of a joke though, and I'll go out on a limb and guess that you'll turn up in the morning and find three fancy pushbikes locked up there.

Just put in decent ground anchors, that's all I'd want.

The only decent thing is having somewhere to store your gear, but that lock wouldnt last 2 hits with a sledge/club hammer.

Within 30secs your bike and gear can be in the back of a van.

I'll pass, but thanks for playing.

Why all the negative waves?
Gear sells for little on ebay so I don't see it as that attractive a target and the bike is more secure than just a disc lock which is more than I ever saw on any bike at my old place of work.
Agree that it could be improved, but I wouldn't mind seeing those in my works car park.

Edit: My old work place had big lockers, showers and changing rooms. That was brilliant. New place has showers, but not much changing room space and a shortage of smallish lockers. Sad
I'm going to have to resort to changing in the disabled toilets, packing my leathers and boots into a foldaway hold all, and shoving that under my desk, along with my lid.

that chain and lock look like they'd take seconds for pretty much any equipped scrote to get through :/

If I was paying for parking the bike I'd want it to be under cover.

The chains look shit and I'm not putting anything of value in that cupboard which will smell of piss in a week from the local wankers peeing on it after a night out.

Also if you came into work in the rain/cold (it's the UK so pretty common) are you going to take your jacket off to hang there then walk in the rain/cold to your place of work?

I agree that overall it doesn't look too secure, which is a shame as basically I think its a good idea.

Why can't they do things properly in this country? Brick Wall

Just watched the video.
I remember the Bike Points thread from earlier this year - same concept/idea.

Maybe work in Europe where it's warmer so less bulky bike gear.
I'll really look forward to stripping off my winter bike trousers and getting changed in the open air/public place.

The could put covers over them to keep bike/lockers dry(er) (if planning permission allows?), like bus shelters sort of thing.

Probably a good idea to place at car parks, would IMO be better if these were park and ride places for those that couldn't ride/store their bike at place of work or night out venue.

Plus how have they addressed the potential security issue - that's put a bomb in a box? That said, could also apply to the postal/courier drop boxes that are popping up (Collect Plus Parcel Point / My By Box). Even seen those outside petrols station. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. No-one blows stuff up any more to make a point do they?

I'd use them at train stations. The price just has to be cheaper than getting a taxi to the station and back.

Steve.

They had these for pushbikes in Colchester around 16 years ago - weren't very popular, but they were a bit out of town.

£1000 each.

No £1000

Oh I mean £25,000 each, and we'll have to get my cousin I mean another independent contractor to fill the concrete.

I'm a bit lax with secuity sometimes, so anything is better than nothing. But if I know I'm going to walking around and don't want to wear all of my gear I just take my topbox. I can carry a heavy lock that way and it will hold my lid, gloves and jacket (and oxford comfy)

I suppose the whole bloody box could be nicked and I'd be screwed anyway.

It would benefit more riders if they just fit a long bar next tot he bike parking spaces to loop a chain through.

On that note, use your own chain looped around the barrier at the bottom. Then don't use the locker or pay any cash... win?

That isn't really new…the carpark near the shopping centre in Derby had them, but anyone using them had to lock it with their own padlock.

On a 2nd viewing, it looks like there's nothing holding the cabinet shut except that teeny little lock, so sure, use your own chain and lock on to the railing (the thing that we actually need) and then use your own padlock on the cabinet.

In fact, never take it off, preventing anyone else using either the cabinet or the provided chain. Congratulations, you now have your own personal bay. Thumbs Up

I have a feeling that was one of the issues with the ones in Colchester.
