I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I basically use it as a phone and occasionally to check things on the internet if I'm in town. One important thing I use it for is as a Tomtom GPS (which I have) and I want to use it with bluetooth to my ear on the bike.

I am clueless when it comes to phones and don't care much for the latest gizmo. I must say I do find the controls on the Samsung to be very annoying and it is a huge brick in my pocket (biggest phone I've ever had).

Anyway I have had the opportunity to get a new iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, I'm thinking about the iPhone 4s as it's the smallest of the two phones.

Question is anyone have any of the iPhones are they any good with GPS?

I would go for a iPhone 5 not a 4. The 4s run really slowly on the new IOS software.
The maps feature is great though. and even if you dont like it you can download googlemaps which is similar to samsungs version.
However they all rely on network signal, whic can be rubbish if your riding through a blanket spot and the course changes for any reason.

I have a Sony Xperia Z1, fantastic phone, the GPS signal and general data reliability with the EE 4G has been superb, and the phone's fully waterproof, so get a mount and you can use it as a satnav Smile

I'm pretty sure the Tomtom app doesn't rely on network signal unlike googlenav and others. It is a massive app and uses the GPS chip.

Yea I was thinking of having just a bluetooth earphone and putting it in my pocket. I use it in the car and just listen to it, don't need to look at the screen, its very good.

The S3 is good for GPS just so big and annoying to use.

Oh your gonna buy the app for the phone? My next worry would be the battery life then, iPhones are notourious for rubbish battery life )I have one, and they are!)

You'll get a lot more phone for less money if you go for a decent android phone.

s5, z1, m8, are just 3 phones much better than any apple offerings.

I was looking at a friends 5s the other day and it just looks so old and dated now. And small.

Another vote for ee 4g - amazing speed and coverage is getting better by the week.

Right well I suppose the question becomes, what is the smallest smart phone I can that is good with GPS, specifically the Tomtom app which I already own for android.

The iphone 5 and 4 both don't look old to me (the 3 does) and they are much smaller than the other phones I've seen.

It's the big size of the Samsung that I don't like, that and the god aweful interface. The swiping, control and touch is terrible compared to the iPhone 4S I tried which seemed really nice.

I'm still not getting the hang of the idea that people buy a smart phone based on its GPS capability, buy a sat nav surely.. Confused

Because I don't need a sat nav screen, with the tom tom I only use the audio only when I do use it in the car and when I bike I want it hooked up to a bluetooth earphone with a radio on via the phone also.

I can't do this with a satnav.

So having a sat nav would be totally pointless and overkill for me on a bike.

You can with a proper bike satnav. But not worth the cost.

If you don't care for any of the functions bar phone and sat nav and want a smaller phone, I'd go for a smaller cheap Android phone - can get something like a San Francisco 3 for about £60 second hand which should do all you need and be pretty compact - hell, the mk1 version of that phone for even less.

But then if the iInterface is worth it to you <shrugs>, go with that Smile.

Perhaps the Z1 compact then?

My girlfriend has one and loves it as much as i love my s5.

Yeah Z1 Compact would be my suggestion too.. I'd have got one myself as I'm not a huge fan of these 5"+ smart phones, but figured as I was getting 4G I may as well get a large display for videos and games.

Plus the camera is superb, dunno if the Compact uses the same one, but I'm really Impressed with mine.

slightly off topic, but has anyone made much use of the app Waze?

have had a quick look at it on the nexus, but still to buy a mount and charging cable for the bike, but looks pretty useful for a free app

Get a cheap Android phone.
A Moto E or Moto G can be picked, brand new, for around 75~85 quid and will be better for voice navigation (TT/Copilot/GoogleMaps) than any iPhone.

I had a look a the Z1 compact. Specs are great, it's only slightly smaller than the S3. But at least it's smaller.

I'll be wanting the phone to do some web browsing as well, and its got 4g.

I may well be going with the Z1 compact.

That said Moto G does look cheap and cheerful and with some sort of a quad.

I have tomtom already.. its very good, from experience I would not want to use a free GPS app.

I may keep the S3 and wait for newer small phones to come out. The Z1 compact is nice, but I think I might wait for the Z1 mini, only available in Japan at the moment.

Been using it for years, very good it warns of fixed speed cameras and has very few daft routes.

The speed of traffic update is amazing, I dropped the wife in the high street as traffic was crap and I couldnt see anywhere to park. I made four left turns, and by the time I was coming back to the high street waze was telling me that the traffic speed was 4mph!

My latest is to run "Trapster" in the background so you get more traffic police warnings, seems to work.
