Evening BCF,

I've got my mod 2 next week and I seem to have "misplaced" my photocard Wink What's the process for having a new category added when you tell them you've lost it - just fill in the form and post it off with the pass certificates or is it more complex than that (knowing the DVLA, it probably is)?

Cheers Thumbs Up

You need to take both parts of your license with you when doing your test.

As above, you cant do a test without your driving licence, both parts.

Hand

I know, I mean after my test I'm going to get a replacement licence because I've heard horror stories of losing entitlements and I don't want to lose my car one, but I don't know how I go about adding another category (A1) at the same time.

I haven't actually lost it, but it's what you have to tick on the form so you get another one.

Take a couple of photocopy of the licence ASAP, keep this safe. When you take mod 2 the examiner will keep your licence and send it off to get the categories added.

You get a pass cert which acts as a temporary licence until you new one arrives. Check it and if there's any errors you need to send it back with a copy of the original and a letter explaining what has happened. Recorded delivery.

They will then sort it for you.

Confused

Sure I've read stuff about the DVLA not being interested in photocopies of licenses, which does make sense given how easy it is to doctor one.

Yea they will probably say it's not a valid licence but it confirms the categories you had.

I've never had an issue with mine. It's all online too nowadays so it's easy to check what you have, maybe a screen shot of their website along with a copy of the driving licence will be enough to persuade em that they have made an error?

It doesn't confirm anything because of how easy it is to doctor a photocopy.

"A motorcyclist was charged with fraud after producing photocopy evidence DVLA had lost his bike licence."

If they are not going to admit to a mistake then you are screwed whatever you do. The best way is to retain the documents provided on passing your test.

I do still take photocopies just for my own benefit. If the entitlement is there and it's a genuine photocopy there's no way they can take it through court and win. It's impossible.

The government and it's departments need to be challenged on everything they do.

FTFY.

Thing is, you don't want to be sending the pass certificate off later, as that's the one way to prove that you actually earned the entitlement.

The way I'd do it is to order up another copy now for £20 ("lost" it, right?), then "find" the old one and let DVSA Derek shred that while the new one with your current entitlements in en route, or better yet, in your back pocket.

I can't imagine having only a single copy of my license any more, entirely due to Swansea's rampant incompetence and arrogance.

Do as the Borg tells ya!

I "lost" mine, just before an address change, it's worth the £20, IMO!

Wouldn't this make you 21/22? Or is 92 just a random number?

Righty-ho, I'll do this. Down the Post Office I go then.

I'd rather spend 20 quid than lose my car entitlement (and I know it's probably as likely as a rocking horse doing a shit but I can't afford to take my tests again Laughing )

It would indeed. 22 next month. I can't afford to buy a bigger bike (much less run one or insure one) so for the time being I'm just losing the loser plates. I've only had 1 lesson as I couldn't afford those either Laughing That and I'm taking the tests on my own bike so I'm far more comfortable doing the tests as I know the bike. I'm doing my A2 before Christmas hopefully (when my student loan goes in) but at least I won't have to dick about doing another theory test and I know exactly what I'm getting myself in for.

I can barely afford to run my YBR as it is (disability benefits don't stretch to much fuel after buying food etc) so doing my A2 licence is a total waste in the sense of even though I can ride bigger, I wouldn't be able to afford to.

Hmm. They're very unlikely to lose cat B. Do you have your car test pass certificate? If money's really tight, I'm not sure I'd bother. It's my cat A that I'm paranoid about.

That's the thing, I can't find it. I've got the actual thing that the examiner fills in while you're doing your test, but not the certificate showing I actually passed.

If you already have a cat B entitlement and you're doing A2 soon anyway, I'm not sure what benefit there is from doing your A1? Seems like time and effort to just repeat it in a couple of months.

In your shoes, I'd do the theory and leave it there until you have the moneys for your A2. Even if you can't afford a bigger bike, it's there for the future.

Free backup...

Just for general DVLA mongsurance purposes: if you change address online, it is free and whilst they ask you to send your old licence in for destruction, they don't seem to care if you do(n't)...

When I did my test at Uxbridge 2'ish years ago, I was given the option of sending it myself. I cant remember why. I had an absolute nightmare with my license and so many things went wrong at the time I have forgotten most of what happened now.

Might be worth asking your instructor if you can request to post the license yourself.

You could always get a certified copy (take it somewhere official to get it certified, I don't recall exactly who is able to do this but probably a solicitor would be an expensive option). The DVLA should accept this if needed.
Usually when the DVLA screw up it's when people have an entitlement to a full A (not tricycle only) that was passed some years ago (before computerisation of the DVLA) and lose their license. The replacement often comes back as limited to tricycles only on A if they already have B entitlement.

If you scan your licence to jpg/pdf/whatever you can upload to some storage/usb memory/cloud/whatever as a security. Make sure it is secure storage.

If travelling abroad you can do same with passport, bike docs, insurance, etc. just in case you need to get some proof (assuming internet in hotel/hostel/cafe/etc.).

Update to the free licence thing - it no longer works.

Last time I changed my address, it was free online and they didn't care if I returned it.

Tried to do it today and they have a form to fill in and return with the old licence... soo.... looks like I need to start paying.

Personally when I pass Mod2 I'm going send off the license on my own, the reason being is it's my only piece of ID. An going to the shop I need ID for several things (don't have a passport and it's going to be a delay).

They should.

I don't expect that they will.

If you do get a spare licence remember that the photo card is paired with the paper part so you can't use a photo from one copy with the paper of another.
