I wanted to start a new thread. Working on the bike fuel system from other thread rebuilt carbs ect and it ran okay. I had a buddy look at it and tweak it and he said it was okay. Took it for ride last night it died at every intersection. My buddy said the battery was bad. I charged it rode tonight some of the same. put a volt meter on it while running and only getting battery voltage. Did this test on the stator:
Reg-rectifiers seldom go out and when they do, as mentioned, they often overcharge. To make sure what's wrong before spending bukus of money, buy an inexpensive multimeter, even a $4 Harbor Freight job. On the left side of the engine, from the bottom or rear of the engine cover will be a wiring harness. I'm not exactly sure how your bike is made, but you may have to remove the cover behind the gear shift lever to get to the wires. You should find three wires of the same color, on Kawasaki they're yellow and I think Suzuki and Kawasaki had the same manufacturer make their stators. Follow the wires to where they plug into a wire connector and disconnect it. Set your multimeter on AC voltage at a range that will handle at least 100 volts. Start the engine and check the voltage of the three pairs of wires on the end of the wire that comes from the alternator. By three pairs, I mean right-middle, middle-left, right-left. Check it at idle and also speed the engine up a bit. I'm not sure about your particular bike, but I'd guess the voltage reading should be somewhere in the 35-50 volt range. The actual voltage isn't really important, what's important is that all three pairs show very close to the same voltage. If the stator is bad, you'll find one pair that shows considerabaly less voltage than the other two. For example, if two pair show 20V@idle and 40V@3,000 rpm but the third pair shows 20V at both idle and 3k, one of the stator windings is shorted out and it's new stator time.
it passed meaning I had about 50 volts in all positions at about 3000 rpms. more volts with more rpm and less at idle but still the same in all positions.
put the connector back together and now I get 13.3 battery and 13.76 at idle. Seems to be charging. what voltage should I get at idle and high rpm 3000? |
