Good afternoon peeps.

I'm in the market for an upgrade to my current phone, and I rather like the look of the HTC One.

I currently have a Samsung S3. It's ok, but a lot of it annoys me. I don't think I really get on with the operating system that Samsung put over Android, and I generally want a nice change.

The One gets a lot of good reviews, but all of them are done with a brand new phone and by someone who is conscious about advertising and keeping people happy. So I was wondering if anyone here has one and could shed some light.

I'm after a phone that just does everything nicely. The S3 is slow, laggy and stupid at doing the simple tasks. The amount of stuff Samsung bolt onto their handsets I'm not surprised that it has trouble just making a call and then quickly changing to a new app. I don't use my phone for anything too intense, but mainly jump between things and want my phone to keep up with me, not thrust loads of 'cool' features in my face.

The S3 used to be fast, but it always had lag issues. Now it isn't fast and often freezes for no real reason. No reviewers seem to cover the longevity of a device, which is something we have to consider when it will be with us for 2 years!

TL:DR - Is the HTC One (M8) a good phone that will still be as good in a year or two?

I got an M7 a couple of weeks back and I am very happy with it. A colleague got the M8 at the same time as an upgrade from the M7. He said that it is a fantastic phone, good battery life, speakers are great, picture / screen is good and an improvement overall.

My girlfriend has the M8, it is a cracking phone, though rather large. Would recommend Thumbs Up

But what are they like after some heavy use? Even my old iPhone started to get slower and more annoying towards the end of its life.

Do you notice the size to be a problem too. My current S3 isn't small, but the M8 is noticeably larger due to the speaker positioning.

Standard answer: You want a Sony Super Phone.

Xperia Z1 or the Z2 if you want better quality videos.

_Troy_, I'm in the same position. Getting the HTC on Friday. My S3 is acting the same (but after all, it's just a small computer, and they all slow down over time). I'm sure the HTC will be the same in two years time when the next super duper phones are out.

Was between the HTC, S5, and Z2 for me. Don't like how big the Z2 is and the S5 just looks like my S3 but with some crappy extras (fingerprint scanner anyone?).

Just go for the HTC, looks to be the best phone currently on the market IMO.

Older brother has the Z1 and raves about it. But huge phone is huge, doesn't appeal.

The S5 was never an option for me. Sick of Samsung's stupid Touchwiz. The size of the Sony's really put me off too.

The M8 does look to be the best phone out at the moment. I did consider waiting for the new iPhone, but then I realised I wasn't a twat and didn't want to spend £60 a month on 5 minutes and a text.

It's a shame you can't test ride phones for a week. You have to live with it for 2 years, so it's actually a big decision.

I've had an S3 nearly 2 years now, abused the shite out of it. It too has slowed down massively and freezes up alot.

I've noticed the RAM is always packed full.. it only has 831MB of RAM..

The note 3 has 3GB RAM, so I am thinking of waiting for the Note 4 to be announced.

I love samsung though.

Thumbs Up

Considered the Note 3 for power and awesomeness. But I have an iPad, and feel the Note would just get annoying once the gimic of super size had worn off.

Agree on the TouchWiz, had a HTC Desire before the S3 and much prefered the Sense overlay.

before you go upgrading give the cyanogenmod rom a try, you'll find that ol s3 is way nippier than you thought it was. I get no slow downs on anything I do on mine at all and you can replace the launcher for whichever one you want easily

If the LG G2 is anything to go by, I've got it and it's brilliant!

The G3 will be a good competitor when it arrives:

Will look into it, thanks.

I've looked at the LG offering, and although I'm impressed, I'm tempted by the metal unibody design of the HTC. The build quality of the S3 leaves a lot to be desired. I have a small piece missing from my battery cover, two of the clips that hold the cover on are snapped so it doesn't sit right and most of the paint has chipped away from the bezel area.

my upgrade is due in nov, i'll prob take the phone that has the highest ebay value and flog it on,

on my tariff there arn't any phones that come near the s3 (I got a very very good deal at the time) so most offered as upgrades will be lower spec Laughing

Exactly. As my life companion for 2 years, it's nice to have a change.

Looking at tariffs, the cost of them goes up each year, and the usage allowances seem to stay the same. At the moment I am paying around £30 a month, and for that I get unlimited texts, 600 mins and unlimited internet. I don't mean 'unlimited' internet where it is actually capped. It is unlimited.

Most of the ones available now are close to £50 with around 3GB of internet, which by todays standards doesn't cut it.

I can get a 20 or 25% discount with work using Vodafone, so that helps a bit i guess.

If your phone is out of warranty, give this a go first Thumbs Up

I had the old original Samsung Galaxy Ace and it went from being painfully, unusably, slow - to good Thumbs Up

aye, i've not been able to find any tarriffs as cheap as mine either, £15 a month, 5000 texts, unlimited internet, 100 minutes.

I barely call anyone and will never get through 5000 texts, partially due to using whatsapp more than texting these days and the unlimited net, like yours, is unlimited and I often use 3gb+ a month

Giffgaff do 250mins, unlimited texts & unlimited internet for £12 a month. No phone with that though, so if you've got a phone included then that's a very good deal Thumbs Up

If size is an issue with the Sony phones, get a z1 compact with the 4.3" screen, it gets amazing reviews. My mates just got one and he loves it. Also the z2 compact is coming out soon but that will be rebranded the sony xperia A2.

I'll look into those, cheers Thumbs Up

I'm still quite set on the M8 though. The original One won best smartphone of 2013 in a number of places, and the metal design makes it feel like you're actually using a top of the line phone.

Most of the shops I go to don't seem to have any working display ones though, so actually getting a chance to use it is near impossible.

No one going to mention the Nexus 5?

Fast processor, no bloat ware, speed and fluidity of the menus and apps is unrivalled (from the stock phones I've tried).
The camera is great too, 8mp and image stabilisation. Add to that some nifty functions like HDR+, panorama and photosphere.
The screen is 1080p and calibrated well.
The size isn't unnecessarily big.
Sound from the headphones is good, though the speaker is quiet, compared the the HTC One's (M7 and M8).
And the biggest seller for me was the stock Android install that gets updated days after the new versions are released.

My only gripe with HTC is their software support. I've had three HTC phones over the years and they all stopped receiving Android updates after less than a year of being released. Two of which had bugs affecting the operation of the phone. I wont be buying another HTC until they address that. It's a shame as the build quality and materials they use are great.

I've looked at it.

Just so you know guys, I'm not looking for suggestions on phones. I have done a lot of research and am still interested in a couple of options. But what I am after is specific experience and thoughts on the M8.
