Just thought I'd see what everyone's reaction was to this? Surely there's got to be an invasion of privacy issue here regarding the satellite receiver chips?!? Confused

Should we pay for motorway-use?

DRIVERS COULD BE charged up to £1.45 a mile to use Britain's busiest motorways under new Government plans.
Their movements will be tracked by satellite receiver chips fitted to their cars and they will be charged accordingly.

The aim is to cut congestion and encourage people to use public transport. The pay-as-you-drive scheme will be outlined in a report by transport officials later this month.

It suggests motorists should pay between 25p and £1.45-a-mile. Charges would be highest during peak times, in cities and on busy motorways. It will cost £3billion to fit the satellite receiver technology to the country's 30million cars but it could raise more than £10billion a year for the Treasury.

The report, ordered by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling, was produced by government officials and experts on transport, the environment and finance. It said the scheme could be introduced within ten to 15 years and would 'unblock roads, to the benefit of the economy and the environment'.

It added: 'Without road pricing, we all lose by higher and higher amounts as the years go by and congestion grows.'

The proposals were criticised by motoring groups. The AA said: 'A satellite system will not be popular with motorists, who are already paying over the odds.

'Drivers annually contribute £40billion in taxes, only £8billion of which goes back into transport. This is just another way to squeeze more money out.'

Friends of the Earth said it supported a road usage charge in principle but it did not address immediate problems.

'Something needs to be done now,' it added. 'The Government needs to spend more on public transport and cycle lanes to give motorists an alternative to cars.'

Last week, ministers announced plans for a 51-mile toll motorway between Birmingham and Manchester.

Road pricing I have no problems with as it is fair enough that the more you use the roads the more you pay. However if they're going to start using it they'll need to get rid of car tax as otherwise we'll just be paying twice.
