I see BMWs big tourer twins and IL4s, they have 100K+ on them, if hey have FSH you reckon they are OK? would you buy one?

Because:

My NTV started falling apart at 60K and fell to bits on its way to 138K.

My CBR600 was fine from 22K to 40K but above that it fell to bits.

Old high mileage BMW I hope you have a trust fund !!

I think they cost more to keep on the road than the Italian stallions like Ducati !!

Clutch is dry and need 14hours to change gearbox is an aged 3 shaft design shafts snap rear wheel bearing go and on a single sided bike costs lots starters and alternators also interesting

Unless you go back to the time when BMW was the best before 1995
Stick with a Bike in Warrantee you bound to need it
I ran R80's for years but would not own a modern one

For reliability and long life stick to a big jap four

I wouldn't rely to heavily on any bike over 100k.
My pan euro is over that and gives me no reason to be concerned but I wouldn't buy one with that mileage to use daily for work.

I did consider buying a bmw gs something for work but told by several reliable, been there and done it people rather than pub specialists that it wouldn't be a wise move.

If it was me, i'd buy a £1000 pan euro with about 70k on it.

I would agree with post above. I have been told by someone who has had several BMWs they are a bike you buy with your heart not your head.

I too would trust a ST1100 providing stainless collector box and swingarm rust/corrosion sorted. Which on a higher mileage bike used regularly it should have been.

I have never seen a Pan sell for less than £2K regardless of the miles!

Unless you want to sell me yours Wink

Even ex police ones with 100K and 30 pages + of service records are £2K

How many miles do you do?

As you have seen, by 100k most bikes are going to be worn out. Not beyond fixing, but beyond economical repair. Where you get lucky is that most people see 30k as high miles, and the prices drop right off when a bike has more than 30k on it. There are notable exceptions - big BMWs, NTVs, anything that dispatchers are meant to like.

Get something with 30k on the clock and run it until 100-120k, at which point you either get rid of it, or give it a really serious strip down and rebuild, replacing a few major components.

If you're looking to run a bike cheaply for a long time and have a garden or shed, the most cost effective way is to have one bike for riding and a couple more picked up very cheap for spares. Also, if you're planning long term/high miles ownership, it makes a lot of sense to fit grease nipples to all of the chassis bearings (headstock, swingarm, suspension linkage). This doesn't just help the bearing - if a swingarm and a suspension linkage are well lubed, you put less stress on the shock and it will last longer.

No bike is going to rack up mega miles for no money. The big BMWs do rack up high miles, but they still need expensive parts from time to time. If they did so cheaply, despatch riders would use them.

TBH I'm just wanting to bang out one big long European ride and then 100 miles a week until my loose ends are tied up in the UK, and my house is built, meaning 10,000 miles tops.

The SV I described in my other thread is potentially capable of this, but as I dig deeper I find more and more faults.

The exhaust was leaking petrol this morning, stuck carb plunger or something, normally this wouldn't be a problem I don't very limited tools and workshop facilities.

My F800 ST hasnt been hugely reliable. 2007 w 56K.

Needed new stator, reg, battery and left heated grip.

The rear bearing was shot, however, BMW replaced it all under a Recall programe , voluntarily.

They gave me a F800 GS for a week, did £800 worth of work, and I wasnt charged a penny.

in the last 70,000 miles, i've replaced the rotted exhaust.

Front wheel bearings twice, just because.

Various calliper seal sets. 1 disc, 1 set of clutch plates and springs.

Usual servicing oil and filters / tyres.

I think that is pretty economical motoring.
