Afternoon!

Quick question. Got a Yamaha XJ6 and its silky smooth from 1000rpm all the way to 12k but when its between 6500 and 7000rpm it feels awful. Its most noticeable in 3rd, 4th and 5th but you can still notice in lower gears and 6th.

Its almost like a buzzing feeling through the pegs which dies away once past 7000rpm.

Being new to bikes is this a normal thing to have a resonant frequency that feels very grindy/rough when accelerating through a rev range?

I asked a couple of mates, one with 10 years+ experience said its normal the other with 30+ years experience said it isnt so thought I'd post and ask.

Cheers Smile

Grindy? No. Buzzy / vibrating in harmony with a resonant frequency? Yes, depending on bike.

It always happens at 650mph. Just power through it.

I get something similar on my ZRX occasionally. Take off the front sprocket cover and clean out any gunk/dirt/accumulated road grime that's in there. I didn't believe it would help when someone suggested it to me but lo and behold, the grindy feeling was gone when I tried it and it's the first thing I check now when the bike feels a bit rough.

It could be something else entirely but it's easy and free to take off your sprocket cover and should take no more than 10 minutes so it's worth a try. I'd also check your chain is at the correct tension, I find it can make a bit of difference to how the bike feels.

I used to get a buzzy vibration through the footpegs at around 8000rpm on my J1 ZX6R. It is normal in my opinion to have a range where vibration and frequency is more noticeable.

I would just try and ride around it, and not sit/cruise right in the middle of the vibration zone. TBH there was no need to be doing 8000rpm at 60mph for long periods on my ZX6, so I think something similar is happening with you and your bike, now it's run in and your probably exploring riding different gears/speeds than before.
