Hey Guys!

so I'm trying to get the bike ready for it's MOT, everything seems good except the speedometer and the fact I snapped the brake lever today (new one has been ordered). I was reading up on the MOT requirements, and it seems to say that the bikes Speedo will not be checked for the MOT. Anyone know if this is true? it's on my to do list to fix, but I won't have a great deal of time to do so this week, and I really want the bike tested!

Source below,

Cheers,

Barry

Needs to be fitted, does not need to work. That said it is a legal requirement on the road for it to be working, so leave the cable attached after MOT and cable tie it up, just snapped officer. Whistle

Mine's been broken for the last 3 MOTs and they've entered the same mileage each time...so no, it doesn't get tested.

Don't they....

How do they get it from where you parked to the testing area?
Or off the brake tester to be able to check the rest of the bike... Laughing

This is true. My lad's bike has a knackered starter so needs to be push started. Not failed an MOT because of it.

I think the comment was

They're moved but I doubt fast enough to trouble the speedometer.

I often look at my speedo when about to go past a speed camera. Not saying it would fail an MOT but for me it's a necessity for legal riding.

Ive came home today from work and had a little play about with the bike, checking it all over, turning it over etc.

Took it a tiny bimble and the speedo now works! Who knows!

Now... how to deal with the big bastard spider under my tank...

Bikes can be and are ridden by the testers, I have had several bikes ridden 2-3 miles during the test. They were usually trying to find out if I had the bog roll stuffed under the fork seal caps Mr. Green granted, these tests were in N.I were the testers are generally a shower of bastards looking to line their own pockets through overtime with the retests.

That is ok, we have that.

My tester will not ride my bike. Likely some don't even have licences Laughing

Hi

The mainland MOT manual has no mention of a speedo. They can look at it all they like but not something they can fail it on.

The NI MOT test is rather gold plated in comparison with all sorts of extra things tested.

All the best

Keith

Shocked Indeed.

So a speedo is NOT required at all on all "daytime" MOT bikes meaning I now save £25 for every bike I get done. Laughing

Hi

Daytime MOT is such a fudge that half the testers seem to make up extra rules. Read them and you can have a brake light (but NOT a rear position lamp, and most brake lights are compared stop / tail lights) and still get a daytime MOT, but most seem to not allow that.

All the best

Keith

Pretty much, the N.I MOT requires a speedo as we have a land border with ROI which means the speedo must work and also be calibrated in KPH and MPH, this is a big problem on some models of bikes as the dual readout speedos are a pain to find. Fixing MPH or KPH numbers to the outside of the speedo glass is a fail and stripping some speedos to do an internal conversion is a total nightmare.

If you have lights, the speedo backlight has to work for the MOT. The speedo itself does not.

You have to hold a driving licence for what your are testing to be an MOT tester
Lose your driving licence and lose your MOT licence
