Me and my BF are taking a trip to Ireland in a few weeks, Does anyone know the law regarding using a bike there on a UK provisional licence with a CBT. I've been informed by two people that it is okay, but one who says it isn't. I kinda need clarification of where the law stands.
I'm fairly sure my insurance covers me for the UK and Ireland.

A quick google didn't turn up much. This explains their rules, which seem similar to ours except you must wear a "learner" tabard... Nice!

https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/learner_driving_permits_for_motorcycles_in_ireland.html

"Before you learn to drive on public roads, you must hold a learner permit, covering the category of motorcycle you wish to drive. A learner permit to drive a motorcycle is usually valid for 2 years.

Learner permit holders are not allowed carry pillion passengers (passengers on the back of their motorcycle) or drive on a motorway.

Motorcyclists with learner permits are required to display L-plates on a yellow fluorescent high visibility tabard. (A tabard is a bib or sleeveless outer garment with open side-seams). The letter 'L' must be in red and at least 15cm in height on a white background, and must be to the front and rear of your torso. It is a criminal offence for learner motorcyclists not to display L plates."

If it was me I'd get myself a tabard as described and take my CBT cert and licence with me.

MMmhhm that was my plan, I've already looked into buying a tabard and can pick one up in Londonderry before i cross the border. Taking my CBT cert with me is probably a good call, I might not have thought of that, thankyou Smile

I checked my insurance this morning and its valid in all EC countries.

Your UK learner permit is valid in... the UK.

Once you pass your test your licence is valid across the EU, but your learner permit quite definitely isn't. Sorry.

You're fine in the North obviously.
