Ok, the back story.

My stepson has been musing on wether to become a biker or not.

He turns 16 in September.

His dad is very anti bikes, but I am not (that is why his dad is anti bikes) and in addition if I can turn him to the bike side it will really piss his dad off but make me feel warm and cosy ( his dad did a lot of damage in regards to my daughters when I got divorced, long story).

Sooo, I am looking for a moped for him, around 300-400 squids and the style he is after is the aprilla rs50 road bike.

Any help in the quest would be appreciated, such as suggestions, links to good buys etc etc.

Alex

Or a DT50 or RD50. If you can find one.

Location may help get a lower insurance quote; but hinder bike-finding.
Similar situation, looking for 'something' for my Daughter for her 16th in 6 months. ALL the school-kids want a pocket-money moped; there's bog all out there for under £500, that's not a project.
Anything with gears is rare, (Apparently 5 out of 6 fifties registered are scooters) and seems to command money; either from more optimistic school-kids or middle-aged teenage revivalists... there was a Suzuki OP50 'Chopper' of 80's vintage, on e-bay the other day, they wanted near two fucking grand for! and I thought 'fizzie's were commanding silly money!
And enough parents who rate the cost of a 'ped against the price of the 'must have' play-ground toy of the season, from a mountain bike to a play-station, and who seem to think that a brand new Chinky 50, they can slap on the credit card, is quite 'reasonable' as a Birthday present.

My conclusion was to give up on the idea; £500 to find something the girl would moan about the style on, then £400 to insure it, plus another £150 to get her a provisional and CBT, then get her a hat and water-proofs... locks, pushes budget well over my means (well over what I spend on my bike each year, TBH!)

So, if she stays interested in PTW's, will probably do something 'next year', with a 125, (she may be able to borrow one of mine) which in many ways is more cost effective and more 'useful'.

Though is rather tempting, to just spend a mere £100 on car driving lessons, and the £150 for licence and tests; stick her on the car insurance and use her as a free taxi service... like she has me for the last umpety years Laughing

I don't dislike his dad that much, lol.

The F1se would be a good choice though Smile

Back in the day it would have been a Fantic Cabellaro, Honda SS50, Suzuki AP50, Yam FS1E etc etc and then the Gov decided it was sfare to restrict the things. Rolling Eyes

I started on a J reg Honda C50 (old J reg 71 year) and could get a decent speed on it. I did have to clip a few ears though when they thought it was a good idea to take the piss out of my granny bike!

Oh the good old days.
