There is a MOT guide somewhere:

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/mot-guides-and-inspection-manuals

Last MOT was £35.

I usually think:

Fork seals leaky or not?

Suspension (rear) bouncy or not?

All electrics work. (indicators and if you can't view the indicators from your seating position do the warning lights work?)

Chain is suitable adjustment.

Head bearing isn't notchy.

Tyres have enough depth (1mm)

Also wheel bearings lift the wheel off and try shake it.

Plus brake test (can you lock them?) and visible brake pad meat.

Seriously blowing exhaust

Also throttle snap, you turn it, it is supposed to snap right back.

Thats about everything

wheel bearing is it front and rear?

with front , how can you do it ? I don't have center stand but have rear and front.

how can you generally raise bike from center apart from getting the center jack, can you use trolley jack , would that put a hole in the pan etc ?

Should be £29.50.

Just take the bike there, he'll find any issues and usually you get a free re-test within 10 days.

Bike MOT is £29.65

As above but also

No Plate must be legal
Exhaust must not be "not for road use" or excessively noisy
Must have rear reflector
If fitted with a passenger seat must have passenger footrests and grab rail / handle

Better mot places will sort minor problems and do freer retest for major within 10 working days

Chain adjustment if slight is only an advisory.

They check your wheel alignment as well, can do it yourself by parking it up then walking across the road and looking at the wheels. Or a pole like the MOT station uses.

Also don't go for a MOT with anything leaking it's a straight fail.

Also if you don't have indicators on your bike put some duct tape over the switch gear.

Everything else is pretty much covered.

They'll check your clocks and exhaust for movement as well.

Pegs yes, grab handles/rail no.

However the bike MOT is VERY relaxed, it will only fail if you have neglected it so much. I have had 1 failure, a monkey bike, that was due to a leak on the tank which only appeared at the MOT centre Laughing

And bollocks anyway, I got an advisory for a chain that was properly tensioned with me on the bike, never heard the like, makes me wonder why we bothered winning the war, price of butter these days.

my MOT is really relaxed, kicked the tyres a bit, turn the lights on an passed it

try an find a friendly MOT tester, a "keen" tester could find a fault in almost anything

https://www.moorespeedracing.co.uk/user/products/large/SUZUKI%20B-KING%20REMUS%20GP%20REVOLUTION%20ALLOY.jpg

would this fail?

re plate, my number plate is 8x5 which is not legal so guess will have to sort that right ?
it will fail with anything that is not 9x7 i guess?

i don't have reflectors and have the tail tidy thing so would that fail ?

It is just my number plate and two indicators . that is all . the bike passed mot last year as it was with no reflectors

Depends on the place entirely, but a rear reflector from a motorfactors is £2.

Tail tidy things also sometimes remove rear number plate lights, a couple of LEDs for £3 sorted that out for me.

Well as said you can get a reflector which sticks onto your number plate for £2 from any motorfactors.

Regarding the rear light it depends.

My NTV, CBR and XT did not have a separate number plate light assembly, instead the rear lights and brake lights the underside was clear plastic which lit the number plate.

My SV which has a tail tidy has neither of these things, the original design had a protruding pod which contained a number plate light, the undertray and tail tidy got rid of this.

Yet the guy who I bought it off passed an MOT with it even though it should have been a fail.

An MOT tester pointed this out to me, oh there's no number plate light. I put an LED bolt above the plate (must be white must not directly show white light to the rear) and wired it into existing brake lights for a couple quid.

If a bike is maintained even half properly it should fly through an MOT. If you know enough to modify it then you should make sure you know enough to keep it legal enough to pass an MOT.

All these pre-MOT checks (or even paid for pre-MOT inspections) smack a bit of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. I mean, the MOT is a MINIMUM ROADWORTHY STANDARD inspection - if it fails then you have been riding an unroadworthy bike and should be drug out into the street and shot like a rabid hamster.

Unless it's a 'stupid' fail of course, like a reflector. But if you fail on something like that odds are you acted like a cunt to the tester anyway.

There are always exceptions of course, like a certain honda dealer in a certain town in a certain southern English county who treat MOTs like a type of advertising "mate, your paint is faded, that's a fail but I can fix it to pass for £8,900,816.67p" Wink

The maximum chargeable price for a motorcycle without sidecar is £29.65 but obviously you will give them £30

just did mine yesterday £29 same as last year, i failed on a
loose hand grip (clutch side, im not sure why it matters, but i jammed nail down the length of the grip)
a tyre that said off road on it (scrubbed the "off" part)
a leaking fuel line (replaced whole line)
headlight clamps loose, (tightened up)
an hour later and i passed Very Happy

bike mots are pretty easy, there are no pesky floors boots or arch ways to rust out, and having a bike leak oil is a good thing because it keeps the frame from rusting Very Happy

as long as all the lights work, the bearing and tyres are good, and the horn works, and its not too noisy it should pass
