Hi.

Going to look at a 2012 Honda Vision 110cc replacement scooter for my aging Peugeot Speedfight.

Its done 5250 miles. Its a private sale and the chap who currently has it has had it 18 months. I asked if it had been serviced but he says he never serviced it or changed the oil but the serice record says it was serviced by Honda at 700.

Looks like the service intervals should be every 2500 miles after the initial 6-700 mile service so it should have been done at 3200 really. So its 2000 miles overdue!

I think its just filter, oil and plug but should I be put off by this?

Obviously I will get it done straight away but Im just a bit wary now. Its on older couple that use it on the back of a motorhome like we do so I guess its not been thrashed. Not that sort of bike anyhow.

Would appreciate some feedback as its 100 miles away and would like to see it ASAP.

Thanks

To be fair it's probably fine if the level is good.

I'm sure many of us have unknowingly bought bikes in a worse state from less honest sellers, if the price is right I would buy it, change the oil and carry on.

Thanks. I kind of know the guy off one of our forums and he knows me as I have 12000 posts on there so Im sure its legit. He tells me he does check the oil and its never needed any.

The price is definitely right I think at £1050 and there is nothing that cheap on ebay or Autotrader if you can find a second hand one at all.

Maybe I can negotiate the cost of a service! Very Happy

I suppose if it sounds and rides ok then presumably it should be fine.

Tell him it's well overdue a service and he knows this, a grand and it gives you a few quid to get some nice oil or maybe you can flush it with some basic oil first?

The engine will be a bit more worn than it should be for 5000 miles, but not greatly so. If it sounds and runs ok, get it.

Laughing Laughing

This is true! However you cannot hang a CBR off the back of a Motorhome and carry it to the French Alps! Shocked

Personally, I'll go in the car have a proper look over it in the daylight, if all is well I'll go back with a van and give him cash on collection.

Even better so, if it's still road legal try and get a days cover policy to take it for a quick test ride and try it out on a steep hill.

If all is well go back and pay for it. I'd rather spend £40 on petrol and some of my time to look at a bike than get shafted and end up with a pain in the backside needing loads of work. Thumbs Up

Overdue maintenance, isn't that bad for it. Although he should really of taken it to a motorcycle garage / MOT station if he couldn't do it himself. They'll happily do it for the £.

Thanks. The mrs is now saying we should keep the aging Peugeot Speedfight (Which has a name) as she is attached to it and we have had it so long its part of the family! Shoot me down in flames but she has a point! Very Happy

Nothing wrong it really apart from it being a bit tatty and needing a new starter motor. Its done 12000 miles been to about 10 different countries and up and over the Alps and Pyrenees! https://www.hankthetank.co.uk

Hmm. In a quandry now.

Hmm. Well a starter motor would be a lot cheaper than £1050.

Yes it would. It just seemed like a good opportunity at that price. I just dont know how long these little scooter should last. Ours is 2004 and done just over 12000 miles. Engine is sweet as a nut but its a bit tatty and little things keep breaking. How long do they go on for?

I've never owned one. But they're 2 stroke, so usually need a piston change after X amount of miles.

It depends on how its been looked after, if it's serviced well and always warmed up thoroughly before full revving it, then the piston can last longer than what the "norm" is.

Although out of experience, 4 strokes are stronger and more reliable. Of course, if it's unmaintained then the 2 stroke will out live it.

Also ask yourself why this new bike is under the normal going rate. If it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Personally, when it comes to someone selling something I'll check them over thoroughly and go to buy with the expectation of being ripped off. I've even been ripped off by a close friend, never again. Thumbs Up

Also I reckon you could fix the Pug up for under £1050 no matter what's wrong with it. Thumbs Up

Hi mate. If the Pug 100cc has lasted you well then fair enough! I'm not mad about them, due to the build quality being a bit less than Japanese stuff, but still good for European machinery I guess. Most of my experience was with a tuned one, which I wasted a lot of time and money on, and suffered a lot of unreliability with too.

Have you looked at something like the Honda AN125 Innova? It's a 10bhp step through style machine with a 4speed box and auto clutch. I think they are like a newer more high tech Honda C90, and I reckon that 2up they would be better than many small wheeled twist and go scooters?

Thanks. Yes I did consider the Innova but I dont like the step throughs to be honest. Mrs suffers neck problems and doesnt like bikes with gears it turns out (see my other thread Very Happy)

You can guarentee the little Peugeot will cough its last now Ive told the bloke I dont want his vision.

Going to spend a few quid on it and get it all sorted. It has been a great little bike.
