Hi all

My Xj600 Pre divy diesel bike just failed its MOT on excesive drive chain wear.

Its a non o ring chain due to limited clearance, and has done maybe 2000 miles.

That seems seriously short lived to me! anybody heard of a 428 chain wearing that quickly?

You sure that chain is 428 ?
If so; is it not a bit weak for the application ?

Lots of 428 non O ring chains are MotoX items.
They are not designed for a long life; simply discarded after a few meetings .

100% 428, its mated to a 08B1 rear sprocket.

The bike only makes 12bhp so its essentially the same as a 125 chain.

Has to be none o ring for the clearance, so I am assuming I should put it down as a maintenance item every 1500 miles then, not that bad £15 a pop.

I was thinking ; more on the lines of the weight of the bike rather than the power output.

428 chains are fitted to 60bhp 400cc sportsbikes but they will weigh
a lot less than an xj 600 and not be £15 chains.

You might be able to fit a non O ring HD item.( sideplates maybe 1mm thicker each side.)

Is the diesel lump a right thumper ?; that wont help .

Aha that bight be a way to go, yeah its pretty shakey, single cylinder 400 cc so big spread out power pulses.

Before I kick in let me just say I can't offer any advice, nor do I know anything at all about that bike, or the chain spec. I did, though, want to ask about what kind of miles those 2k were - how many wet road miles? And what kind of a chain cleaning / lubing habit do you have?

To me, those are the key questions above and beyond the kind of bike and the type of chain.

The chain I just bought is a DID non O ring, so standard Jobby really, cant even remeber the manufacturer of the original.

Is a good point, to be fair the chain is well lubricated the whole time, and cleaned maybe once a month, those 2000 miles where over 1 year, maybe a handful of rides in the rain.

two thousand miles is frankly crap.

either you didn't clean it or something was very wrong.

fit a chain oiler next time, loobman or the like.

I agree that 2000 miles is crap, but im thinking the wear is from something else

The front sprocket is 428 profile, the chain is 428, but the rear sprocket is 08b -1 . I know the 08b and 428 are very close, but they arent identical. Maybe the size difference is causing the accelerated wear.

Okay - that is a bit bloody weird then! Certainly doesn't seem to be a case of neglect (although I personally would clean it much more regularly). 2K's nowt. I'm thinking manufacturing defect and / or poor materials. Confused
