anyone tried the gelert pod?
from what i can gather the normal one is 2 season. and there's an "xl" version which is warmer, rather than bigger, for 3 season.
basically had a quick camp out over the weekend, bought my first self inflating sleeping mat, where have you been all my life!!!!
but finally decided my german military sleeping bag is a nuisance and needs replacing. got it as it had a square bottom, mummy bags make me mad, can't be restricted, hate it. it also had sleeves and i was doing security work out in cold hills in wales. served its purpose for sitting in the van.. but as just a camping tool, it's getting annoying. it's too small, the sleeves get in the way unless you use them, and it's bulky and doesn't squash down at all.
had a mooch around online, found the gelert pods, found sports direct had the xl version on clearance for £22, thought gotta be worth a bash. so I've ordered it and wondered if anyone else had used it and had any thoughts to share on it. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

Fine for summer, you can move your feet around and it unzips to make a simple rectangular cover. Good for couch surfing too
I bought a normal one for summer because it was cheap and reasonably small pack size.
They are quite short. I'm just over 6 foot and it could do with being longer. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

came today. can only say you've been nowhere near the xl... it's 6ft9 long i can get in it to the bottom and raise my arms straight up and just my fingertips poke out the top.
proof will be in the pudding on testing it in devon next month, but it's looking a goodie so far. mahoosive though, stuff sack it comes with is shit, will need to find another. and then a ratchet strap to squash it as small as possible. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

The problem with big roomy open bags like that is theres so much room to heat up with your body temp and a lot of it escapes out the top (unless it has a neck baffle). Fine for summer camping & sleepovers but crap in the cold Mummy bags might be more restrictive but theyre a LOT warmer, also if you buy a decent branded one (e.g. Rab or Mammut - though these will set you back in the region of £100 or more) theyre ergonomically shaped rather than a generic "mummy" shape and despite being restrictive are actually incredibly comfortable. |

the hooded bit at the top does all close down with drawstrings.
i get that theres more space to heat, but i am a generally warm person anyway. i can be on the floor naked sweating whilst the mrs is wrapped up in a duvet with a hot water bottle moaning about being cold. we're both abnormal i think at opposite ends of the spectrum. so as long as there isn't massive heat loss, which there shouldn't be... it'll be fine. it's also big enough that i can have a fleece blanket inside with me if i absolutely need it. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

Easily 3 seasons warm, and very well put together. ____________________ Current bike - 2018 H2-SX, 2004 SV1000s, 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RF, 2017 Sherco SERF 300, 2003 Suzuki DRZ400 (stolen - AY53 JUU) |

Well, I suppose you could, if you wanted.. but it's more 'damp' resistant rather than full on waterproof
The best bit is not having to crawl out of, and back into a mummy bag at 3 in the morning when you need a pee! ____________________ Current bike - 2018 H2-SX, 2004 SV1000s, 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RF, 2017 Sherco SERF 300, 2003 Suzuki DRZ400 (stolen - AY53 JUU) |
