Just been to look at a Rieju RS2 Matrix 50cc for my boy, and although most of it looked solid, the motor didn't seem to have any real oomph. It's had a lot of work done on the engine, new pistons etc, but it doesn't really rev freely and you have to give it plenty of revs just to get it moving.

Obviously it's only a 50 so it's not going to rip my arms off, but i'm sure it should have more pull than it did.

Thing is, i'm wondering if i've passed up a bit of a bargain, as it might be a simple fix. It just concerned me that it'd had all that work done and still was sluggish.

There's still time to get it, but i thought i'd ask in here and see if anyone had any ideas as to why it might be running so lacklustre.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

If it's a bargain calculate the saving versus the cost of a good replacement engine minus the value of the current one. If it's still a bargain then why not. For me it would depend on whether I had to time to spend on it. Sometimes it's more worthwhile to pay the extra and get a few overtime shifts in.

Thats pretty normal for a 50cc geared bike.

A friend of mine races an AR50. It is far from standard and even that needs near enough max revs and alot of clutch slipping to get it moving.

Pretty bikes. A lad at work had one with a 70 or 80cc top end kit. It went really well in that trim and saved him buying a 125 at 17. He used it right up til he passed his DAS a few months later.

Weirdly, he sold the Rieju then and has never bought another bike in the 5 years since.

It may be a case of expectation management. I was really sadface about how slow the DR125SMs that I tried recently felt. A 50cc combustion chamber is half the volume of a deck of cards.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Pete: Doing the (very rough) maths it would probably work out, but it would depend on what's up with the one that's in there - if indeed there is something wrong. But like i said, i don't *think* there's too much wrong with this one, probably something silly, and it's had a new top end done recently, so maybe worth the gamble.

evoboy: Maybe you're right, it's just when i compare it to his KTM 80MX (admittedly a different kettle of fish, and 30cc bigger) it just seems unresponsive in comparison. It takes ages in comparison to reach max revs. Maybe i should stick the KTM lump in it Smile

c_dug: I know! I know! Smile I realise it's not going to be a monster, it's more that the revving feels very 'tight' and a bit lethargic. It could just be the timings out slightly or somthing.

Vincent: It's on about 15k, which is quite low for an '06 bike. Think it's genuine too, as he had previous mot certificates and they all match up.

Nexus Icon: Hadn't thought about that as an option. Bit strange that he did that tho?!

My lad has one of these and when he first had it six months ago or so it was pretty quick for a 50.loads of paperwork and a tonne of money spent on it. suddenly lost power. took it to a reputable garage near to us and he said it needed a top end rebuild. done this with my lad and it ran much better but not like it did.
took it back down the garage and after some time he seemed to think that perhaps now needed a bottom end rebuild??? now gears engage without pulling the clutch lever in?
anyway. lovely looking bike but we found that getting good used spares can be tricky and as you can expect new parts from dealer can be a bit pricey.
fortunately, on occasion parts for these come up on ebay but dont seem to be around for long and the engine is a minarelli am6 without the kick start that is found in a few other geared 50's so not so bad for parts on this.
like Pete says if you have the time and the price is fair then go for it. there's not really a lot to them to be honest and my lad loves it.
sorry for the novel but thought it may help?
good luck.

I had one of these at 16, was good fun for a 50. Can't remember how it felt to ride mind you but no major complaints. It had over 20k on the clocks and was still going strong

Oh, until I smashed into the side of a van at about 40 mph Laughing

But yeah, was a good bike, went straight from that too my rvf after passing my test. If it's cheap enough then I say get it. May feel slow to you but most 50s will, nipper will probably love it
