Might be old news to some, but its new to me, and potentially useful info for disabled wannabe bikers.

Other half wants a trike, but can't take a bike test, so she's been screwed by 3DLD, or at least she thought. There was a consultation in August last year to discuss including the trike entitlement with car license for drivers over 21. That consultation passed, and if you pass a car test you will now receive cat A with code 79 (trike) restriction in addition to your cat B.

The consultation: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/motorcycle-lorry-and-bus-driving-licences-and-driving-test-rules/further-european-changes-to-driving-licences-and-driving-test-requirements

As far as I was aware you could already drive any trike with a car license anyway.

You was restricted by weight I believe when using one with a bike license previously,

Pretty sure it was that what license you need was down to what the trike chassis was from.

Which means the chances seem kinda pointless. Confused

Pre-2013, trikes were Cat B so needed a car license. If you passed your car test before January 2013, you were grandfathered in, so yes, most people can ride a trike on their car license.

3DLD moved trikes to Cat A, meaning you needed a bike license to ride one and could only test on one if you were disabled, which introduced a whole new load of ballache for disabled people without an existing car or bike license, since they now had to try and find an instructor and test centre with examiners who understood trikes, as well as jump through the various hoops to show their disability entitled them to test on a trike.

The consultation means the UK will now allow new drivers over 21 to ride a trike on their car license. It's still a Cat A vehicle, but it means people passing their car test now will get Cat A entitlement with code 79(tri) restriction, giving them the same entitlement as somebody who passed their car test before 3DLD.

Apparently this entitlement only applies in the UK, whereas those who passed their car test before January 2013 can use theirs in Europe, but I don't believe we're using a different code to identify those riding a trike on a car license vs those who passed a bike test on a trike.

The Piaggio isn't a trike - not enough distance between wheels.

hi,
i think the most dratic change was, up until very recently anyone with provisional licence (for both bikes + cars iirc) was allowed to ride ANY sized trike, as long as it was solo seated.
WITHOUT a cbt or L-plates (iirc).

i know this for a fact as i know of at least 2 people who are now going to have to pay for + complete a test, which bares very little relevance to the trike they own.

+ the fact that these solo seat trikes are used about 5 times a year due to the scottish weather, makes it seem a rip off.
im sure there wasnt many riding under these conditions but if i know 2, theres bound to be a few others,

cheers,
GAZ
