Evening all,

I'm going to spend a night or two away from home trying not to get deaded, my stuff nicked, or involved with any Rohypnol shenanigans.

Want to be riding further out, Wales, Scotland, Spain etc But need a shakedown first.
New forest is pretty local. Can anyone recommend a particular campsite, one that's bike friendly (if there is such a thing).

Had a look at a couple, but the reviews aren't great and many sites appear to not allow single blokes. Probably for every moaner there are 1,000 happy campers, but still, thought I'd check in with those in the know. You lot Smile

Also, are there any websites that are useful for finding bike friendly campsites, or campsites in general?

Thanks.

When you say campsites, do you mean 'go in and pay for your plot' kind of campsites, or 'that's a tidy secluded piece of field' kind of campsite?

I can understand getting showering and cleaning facilities every few days when on the road, but what's wrong with throwing yer tent up in a field?

Fair point, I was thinking of dipping my toe in, breaking in gently. I know that this is Southern England and not the Outback, so there really is nothing to worry about as such. But I've not been camping since I was 15, so figured a nice and simple introduction would be good. WC's and a shower.

In reality, the New Forest is £7.50 worth of Petrol from me, and the campsites are around £15 / night (after deductions). So it's a bit crazy, I could just ride home, kip and head back again Smile

Was thinking of bumbling down to some beaches and the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum. But you are right, a field would do.

I just took the lad camping as he hadn't been before. We left the house (by car) around 7pm and drove about half a mile to Blaise park (Bristol). Huge field, popular with dog walkers and they close the gate to the public at night.
Nowt wrong with throwing a tent up, even in front of public. Make sure your a fair way into the field though away from the night time chavs that may spot ya, and your golden.

Do a google satelite search for suitable areas, with street view to confirm Thumbs Up

I stayed in Hollands Woods campsite with the bike for 2 nights, was fairly decent, price was alright. Was a bit of a queue in the mornings for showers and stuff, and they closed the blocks at 10ish for cleaning..

The Forestry Commission used to own/run the bigger camp sites in the national park.

Then they decided to whore it out, so the prices sky-rocketed!

I've stayed in Ashurst a fair number of times. Site is not bad. Pretty spread out. The wash block is a decent size, but as mentioned busy in the mornings.

I was looking at going in August, but at £81 for 3 nights, it's sadly a bit steep now...

Mate, can't praise Spain enough. that was my first big adventure other than BCF BBQs.

Superb roads, like genuinely. Don't hesitate. Take the ferry if you want but book a cabin and bring EU plugs to charge stuff. Really enjoyed it, wild camping is fairly legit in most places, plenty of camping sites anyway.

If you want I can PM you the details of all the little places we stayed, all but 2 were more than adequate, one even had a swimming pool Drooling Was just inside France and has some EPIC roads.

Tl;dr... Wouldn't bother wasting your bike on our shit roads, head over the Spain brah.

Our neighbours go to Sandy Balls every year and they love it. You could look at that but it might me a bit expensive/posh.

I have stayed at the Long Meadow Campsite behind the Showground before, although this was with my wife and with the car, not a bike.

But the wardens were probably the most friendly ones we have met (and we camp a lot!) and the facilities although basic (showers and toilets in porta-blocks) they were immaculately clean and the water was roasting hot.

You can also walk to a couple of villages for supplies if you wish, probably and hours round walk through the forest - which is fine.

Seems quite expensive though now Confused

Thumbs Up

Thanks all, have had look and Hollands Woods looks pretty good, and £15 off-peak seems as cheap as it gets.

Wet Friday and Saturday, so I might postpone. Just go out for a blast locally Friday, come back home and pitch the tent in the garden, save myself £15 and misery in the wet Smile

Paddy, your a bad man! Smile
I need to get better at riding a bike, thinking leaving spain til next year. Want to do Wales, Scotland, Lake District, Peak District etc first. At least if I stick it in a hedge I can understand the paramedics Smile
For a while, I was thinking of moving to Spain (Castilla-León). Northern spain has a similar climate to ours, but 200 hours more sunlight a year!! And some nice mountainous stuff, not to mention easy access to southern France & Italy.
Wanted to do the Calmino trail, but gave up on the idea as for some reason property prices didn't really crash in northern spain like they did by the coast. Although that was in 2011, so it might have changed.
But very little was for sale, as many spanish own property in the north and the south, they retreat to the north during high season to escape the heat and the English Smile

Am interested in doing a run from Bilbao / Santander to Ovideo and Santiago. But not just yet.

Thanks again!
