reet, my e reader died the other week and been looking for a new one, however now tempted to up to a tablet instead which I can user to read books as well as other bits (eg play video)

question is, whats the best tablet I can get for under £100

preference on battery life however as long as it lasts a few hours a day of use that would be fine as I can charge nightly anyway

Tablets aren't really all that great for reading books from - you really do want an E-Ink display for that sort of thing. Of course, E-Ink does rather preclude video playback.

yeah that was my reason for my old one but I primarily read indoors with decent lighting or in bed with the light off so can't see it being a screen rather than e-ink being a big issue

Backlit screens can cause eyestrain, whereas E-Ink ones are typically sidelit, negating the problem. They're also subject to much shorter battery life, due to the differences in how they generate images.

Personally, I'm a massive evangelist when it comes to E-Ink readers - I bought a kobo glo a while back, and have not regretted it since. Slightly over your budget if you buy it in a shop, but worth the money, IMO.

That said, there are ones on eBay for ~65 quid.

ORLY? Good to know, although I've never felt the need to use their update software - I just dump books straight on there from my PC, and leave the wifi on the glo turned off.

How is it broken, exactly? Is it totally impossible to do a factory reset?

Going back to your original question, the general consensus was that the Tesco hudl is good, or a second-hand iPad should do the job.

I would always have a separate e reader. Have had all of the kindles so far and have the paperwhite at the moment, by far the best e reader I have used. And almost defiantly the best value for money gadget I have ever bought.

If you are desperate for a tablet, I have a Nexus 7 I don't use that I could sell you.

yeah was an original wifi kobo (with the 4 directional button thing) update was forced, as soon as I connected to wifi it forced the update, this killed off the library, wiped all books on the device and won't allow to connect to the store or put any books on from pc rendering it compeltely useless, factory reset did nothing, either via the menu or the pin hole in the back, even tried to flash an image onto another micro sd and put that it but didn't work either.

apparently a fair few with the same problem also. Emailed kobo a few times but no response at all from them, doubt they care as it's way out of warranty and slightly suspicious they killed them off with this update to convince people to upgrade

not desperate for a tablet but budget wise it seemed to make sense to kill 2 birds with 1 stone,

may just get a cheap e-ink reader instead then and forget about the tablet side

Have you tried loading books on using Calibre? You should still be able to download the book files from the store on your PC, IIRC (not sure though, I never used their shit desktop software).

If you pop the case, you'll see that the miniSD that the device's OS is on can be accessed - I'd use something win32DiskImager to write the image to that, straight from your computer, as opposed to using the kobo to do so.

thats exactly what I already tried fella, I use calibre as standard anyway, calibre shows as loading the books on but when the device is turned on it doesn't see any.

tried side loading also. imaged an sd using win32diskimager but it wouldn't boot from that image at all (to be fair it was one someone on a forum sent me as I had no backup of my original one)

Fair play mate. In my experience, the later versions of the Kobo hardware don't seem to have those problems but in fairness, I've never felt the need to use either the wifi or the store.

No idea what they're like but Nooks can be had for around £30.
https://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/id/NOOK_Simple_Touch/9781400699032?gclid=Cj0KEQjw3cKeBRDG-KKqqIj4qJgBEiQAOamX_XTq1ox5M2_bAQvZjYigHyw8NGlP9e_dgERgGwidMpoaAlmi8P8HAQ

I own a Kindle, quite old now but if it broke I'd get another.

I bought a Nexus with the idea that I would use that for ebooks and sell on my Kindle.

I scrapped that once the tablet was bought as the tablet is no replacement really (well, it will do, just not as well).
The thing the tablet does better is graphic novels/comics. So I bought a 10" too Razz

this is another reason I was considering a tablet as I read a fair amount of graphic novels etc and they're awful on e-ink

seen some nooks for £30 and also nook hd+ for £85 ish, anyone any experience of these?

Corrected for honesty Wink

If it wasn't for the graphics I'd say Kindle (not Fire, I have no experience). Does what is says on the tin, you can read a book! Shocked Rolling Eyes

I have not found a tablet that's (a) rubbish outside and (b) has a decent (as in > 1 day) battery life.

Bought my missus a Nook HD+ recently, specifically for graphic novels and comics. I'm actually quite impressed by it. I use a Nook "GlowLight" as an e-reader, while it's not entirely standard (I'm a flashaholic for custom firmwares and tinkering) it's proven to be great. I've been converted from ardent hatred of the idea of reading on a slate to having trouble imagining life without it.

Look around and you could probably bag both a GlowLight and an HD+ for not much over £100 at the moment.

ended up going for a nook hd+ can stick cyangenmod on it also if I don't like the stock ui.

seems to be decent for the money and I do read a lot of graphic novels and primarily indoors so light reflecting isn't a big issue

got the 32gb one preowned to keep the cost down

Stock ui is ok, it's pretty smooth and fairly intuitive. I'd still recommend finding a cheap glowlight if you can. Some good free manga apps around once it's flashed /rooted.

CM 10.2 "stable" on mine was anything but. Ironically Kobo books app causing the havoc. Make sure you back up and store the stock ROM safely if you're playing with it.

I turn the display to sepia and the brightness down and it's no big issue. E-ink is amazing for battery life tho, but that's the trade off with fancy colour displays.

I have a 3rd gen iPad that I use for graphic novels and comics, and a Kobo Touch that I use for reading. I picked the Kobo up for £30 as an offer at WH Smiths, and since then (Feb / March this year) I feel like I have gotten my moneys worth.

Goes without saying, will try 10.2, if it's a bit iffy could try 10.1 or back to stock Thumbs Up

been running well so far but havn't put a massive amount of things on it, trying a few e-reader apps etc and some cbz reader apps.

seems like a nice device for the money
