right, i was in my garage last night about 11pm, i was just finishing up, rolled up the extension lead, and it got caught on my brothers bike, so i un hooked it, rolled it in, and it got caught again, i moved the other way and it got caught again, finally i shouted "oh fuck off!" at it

and my gran who was leaning out the window at the time, for some bizarre reason, told me, "how could i be so rude?"

obviously she is from an entirely different generation, where it isnt at all acceptable, irish catholic as well (im lucky i wasnt burned at the stake) she wont even utter a swear word

just wondered what everyone elses views on it are, who gets offended by people who swear in their everyday speak

i do it, more so since in the navy, and for the most part, most people dont seem to mind, but im just curious as to those who do mind? those who cant help it? and those who do it without realising (like myself)

I sometimes swear more than I should - mainly the 'f' word, but I don't think excessively!

However, sometimes I swear without even noticing it!!!

I don't get offended by other people swearing, 'tis only words!!

I hope I don't upset other girls on here, but I hate it when girls moan at guys saying the 'c' word!!! It's only a bloody word for gawds sake!!

I swear quite a bit, I'm sure I don't notice it most of the time.

However, when walking round town and you hear some 10 year old say to his/her mates "yea that focking hoe can such my focking whoreish dick" or something, that strikes me as bad!

I swear a bit too much, especially when i get angry at the kids Embarassed Doesn't offend me either with the swear words, the only thing i don't like is when you hear 10 year old mouthing off acting all hard, swearing their heads off. That i don't find very nice.
Bit of a hypocrite as i swear in front of my kids but my little girl tells me off for it!

I swear constantly and don't realize. I have to think about what i'm saying when i'm in front of grandparents or small children, just out of respect. True I got far worse since joining the army, must be something to do with the forces.
Don't see why people get offended. I mean if the Oxford dictionary defined the word 'Friend' as a swear word, would people find that offensive?

I tend not too swear too much ... although since I have started my new job a few months back I found myself doing it more and more ... mainly directed at my PC!!

I personally don't like hearing lots of swearing especially when it is used in a conversation without a real need as some people do.

and Fallen Angel, you are not alone, I also don't see all the fuss about the "c" word ... it is a swearword just like any other!

I swear alot, mainly the f word here and there and shit, b*ll*cks etc.

I don't find them offensive at all, cos at the end of the day there only words.

I do however find the C word quite offensive and so do quite alot of others!

NC30 Chick - I bet your kids don't swear though! More a case of "Do as I say and not as I do" I'd imagine - I'm the same with my step-kids!

There is a time and a place for rudeness. I usually am not offended, and often find it quite funny.

However, what I do dislike is the use of swear words to replace existing vocabulary eg. "Too f-ing right, it was f-ing large like an f-ing fat f-er" you get the idea.

I very rarely swear. My mates used to slag me because I wouldn't ever swear. But if I ever did I'd get a weird look as it was just weird if I did swear.

I don't get offended by it, but it isn't very gentlemanly.

I do swear too much already, but I aim not to really. I certainly don't do it in front of my parents, grandparents or small children.

I also try not to swear in front of my girlfriend. Occasionally though being able to swear with impunity can be useful... (like when some chav is trying to steal your bike for example).

I definitely cringe when I hear people doing it in a public place !

Its odd really isn't it? after all, as others have said they are just words, but they do seem to provoke a reaction.

And certainly some words are worse than others!

that tends to happen too much when you are surrounded all day with people who do the same Confused

and i know what you mean marjay, when people say "jesus christ" that tends to cut through me, and im not really sure why, im not particularly religious, its just the sound they make when rolling off the tongue, makes me cringe a bit

I'm not bothered about swearing about things, as long as it's not excessive, but I don't like swearing at people or calling them an f'ing c, etc.

I'm trying really hard not to swear around my little girl though - she's 8 1/2 months old and is just saying 'dada' and 'mama' so hearing that cute little voice turn the air blue would really upset me.

I must admit that I do swear quite a bit. I've noticed that I do it a lot at work when things go wrong. I say bollocks a fair bit, as I do shitting hell and fuckwit Laughing . However, I say them in a stressed-out way and I try not to swear in public. I'm not one of these people who swears for the hell of it, there's got to be a justified reason!

I was brought up to not swear, and I remember getting a clip round the ear 'ole when I was about 16 for telling a wasp to piss off.

Now that I'm living away from my parents, I have noticed that I swear more and in front of them, but God help me if I ever said the "F" word in front of them!

The only words that struck me there were "See you next Tuesday" Razz

Looking at that ad, why do the Americans make such a big deal out of it, like that dude who got really enthusiastic by saying "You SON OF BIIIIITTCCH." Confused

What really annoys me is people (specifically men) who swear and then say "Sorry, luv".

Just Say It.

If I was offended, I would say so.

Ooooh... I'm going to post the link to the Channel 4 swearing promo again. I did put this in funny stuff last week, but don't know how many saw it there.

N.B. it's on quite a slow server and is 2.8Mb, so you might have to be patient if you want to watch it.

Lots and lots of naughty words

DEFINITELY NOT WORK SAFE!

EDIT: links to same video as SteveH's post above.

Er, ok Embarassed but you didn't give a clue in your post as to what the link was and I hadn't clicked on it. Still, worth watching more than once in my opinion.

I am a rare person who never swears! My friends occasionally want to know why I don't, and I honestly don't know.. I'd just rather not!

Other people swearing doesn't really bother me though, unless it's excessive, pointless, or coming out of the mouth of someone under the age of 15....

i must agree with izzi81 i really rarely find a reason to swear, however people wind me up ( and i am on the end of a "help line" at work, behind a counter in a shop rest of time)
what does offend is the totaly disregard some people have of the use of the F word etc and will use it for no reason.
i can see the point of a short sharp expletive when theres a good reason, impaling yourself on spike etc.. but rudeness for no reason is unpleasant.
I find this especially so with girls of a certain age, especially if you have refused to sell them cigerettes/alcohol, the air goes blue
