I've been thinking about this for a while.
I was wondering what will be the next classic bikes, those that'll be cherished and gawped at in say 15-20 years time?

Now the old ones are easy, Vincent, the odd BSA, Brough Superior, etc.

Modern stuff is a little harder as IMHO it's all a bit the same. Arguing over fastest like the Hayabusa, ZX12 and Blackbird comes down to numbers and 'mines bigger than yours' bitching.

Now for a modern/future classic you'll have to include the Ducati 9xx series on style alone. Which raises another question similar to the old classic Brit bikes. To be classic does it have to have a fundamental reliability problem?

Here's what I've come up with so far. The list is based partly on what I'd like in my garage in 15 years time Wink I'm not a Honda fan especially, the list just came out that way.

Bimota Mantra - a bike designed like this must be preserved!
Ducati 916 - italian style for the masses
Honda CG125 - stood the test of time, the VW Beetle of bikes.
Honda ST1100 Pan-European - unchanged for years, right 1st time.
Honda CBR 900 Fireblade - redefined the big bike sports class.

Please feel free to disagree and add to these (with reasons) Laughing

But that's cos I want one, definitely a future classic! Thumbs Up

I'm not sure I agree with the Pan - its just a bit, well, not classic.

I'd add the original gixxer 750 and possibly the Fazer 600. Oh, and the V-Rod. And the MV F4.

The red/black/white R1s are meant to become a collectors item as far as I'm aware. They were meant to be the 'ultimate' sports bike or something according to MCN, but don't quote me on it. That way you can't blame me if you're an idiot and goes out and spends £8K on an R1 and say "it'll be a classic one day it will" and then lose all of your money and try and blame me!

Anyway, got carried away

OH, just been reminded, need to add:
BMW R1100GS - better than the original R100GS, classic Paris-Dakar

Noggin,

I agree with you mate Laughing

The original R1 redefined the big bike sports class. Honda tried with the Fireblade but then came the 98 R1.

Definately a Classic for the future.

Not that you are at all biased! Laughing

Surely you would have to put the CBR6 on the list somewhere, it has been the benchmark for 600 sports for quite a while.

I agree the R1 is good but the Fireblade came first, forcing Yamaha to create the R1 (and they took a bit of time to do it). That's the criteria I used for a classic.

The R1 is waiting in the wings but I also think a classic should not have to be tinkered with, that's why the Pan-European makes it into my list. Smile

A colleague has just convinced me to add this:
Honda VFR750 - classic all rounder, nothing has matched it

The GSXR750 and possibly the 1000 are always going to be mentioned like the GSXR's of old.

The original R1.

The original Blade.

CBR600, one of the biggest selling bikes of all time.

Harley V-Rod, a new Harley!

Yamaha V-Max.

Probably loads more and depending on the person/publication as to what is or isn't a classic.

GPZ900: first general production bike to crack 150mph (and still do), total Icon of the era.

Early fireblades: Noone had seen ANYTHING like them at the time.

250 Superdreams: for the same reason as people collect BSA unit singles and Bantams, a complete mystery to me though.

TL1000S is a certainty: Anything with a ludicrous amount of power in a badly handling chassis and with a short production run has become a classic. Brough superior, Kawa H2 etc. etc.

yep i agree with most of these, 916, original blade, R1 , all of the suzuki gsxr series will be classics too, they already have such a hardcore following but little bikes like NSR125s will be classics too, people always want to remember their first bike

superbike evolution
z1/1000
gpz900
zzr1100
gsxr750/1100
blade
r1
gsxr1000
all these are important bikes
cbr6 just cos it's so ubiquitous
and all italian bikes cos they are nice Smile

Hi

Any bike can be regarded as a classic, but I would limit it really to those which outstanding that people dreamed about, or just about managed to buy.

As such:-
Ducati 851 series
Original GSXR750
R1
RC30
Bimota Tesi

Not sure an MV would qualify. Nice enough looking (except the headlight), and a good bike, but nothing dramatically new or different.

Suspect stuff like the VFR750 and Pan will just be treated as boring stodge in the future, while the sports 600s will probably only be collected by those who owned them and have fond memories of them.

All the best

Keith

If you want some classics buy some of the bikes with iconic late 70's early 80's styling. They are currently dirt cheap, slightly fashionable and easy to get parts for. They are currently slightly fashionable due to the 80's revival, give it a few more years for them to become rare. Soon every old gezzer will be talking about the honda superdream he had in his young and how it was the best thing since sliced bread, despite the fact they were shité Razz

Missing the point I'm trying to make. What is current NOW, or within a few years (without being already retro) that'll be a classic in 15-20 years time!

Not that I'm interested to stockpile (can't afford to do that), just curious as to others regard as deserving classic status.

Hmmm, Classic's in the future, erm Maybe the:

ZZR600
CBR600RR
Z750
GS500 (Only cos they corrode and there won't be that many about making them rare Laughing)
R6
R1
GSX-R750

I'd list more but I can't be arsed and I need food!

The V-Max is a definite potential classic. They'll all be remembering how dodgy it was to ride but how much fun.

And in a similar V type vein ... I reckon there'll be those who go (in the same fond but awkward way people talk about Superdreams or CX500s) ... "Ah, I had a V-Rod once ..."
