 |

My bike seems to be leaking oil, each time I think I've stopped it I notice some dribbles hanging off the belly pan, tonight this has become a puddle under the front of the belly pan (was put on centre stand tonight instead of side stand).
Causes so far have been a cracked clutch cover which was replaced
I then noticed a bit of a weep from the oil filler cap, added an o ring to the filler cap after the bike had been right side down.
I'm still getting oil gradually dribbling Out of the fairing which could be some oil from before being slowly washed out or it could be a leak.
I'm going to take the belly pan off and clean the underside of the engine, tighten the hoses on the oil cooler and change the oil and filter (overdue)
Hopefully this will resolve or make it obvious what's leaking.
Any issues with this plan / anything I should be aware of / anywhere else I should check?

Remove all fairings, clean whole engine with paraffin ( it will look showroom if the paint is good), wash paraffin residue off with hot soap and water. Dry thoroughly.
Cake in baby talc ( yes talcum powder all over the engine ) Bring up to working temp and let idle a while.
Inspect for traces of oil, talc will show where it comes from very clearly

Right, belly pan off.
Just incase anyone else needs to know or I need to remember later:
The technique for getting a ZZR600 belly pan off when fitted with R&G crash bungs is as follows:
Use a ring spanner and socket set to take the right hand crash bung off, the nut will either drop onto the top of the collector box or drop right through.
Slide crash bung and bolt out, slide crash bung off and slide bolt back in (I'm lead to believe the bolts are specific lengths so this way I'm not wondering which is which later)
Remove the silver trim strip, two screws at the rear, slide forward and down.
remove screws that hold belly pan to the fairings above
un-bolt the two bolts at the rear underside of the belly pan (ignore the front screws, they just hold the belly pan together)
the belly pan will now be held in place only by the right hand crash bung, carefully moving the belly pan out of the way you should be able to get a 17mm spanner up (not enough space for a ring spanner) from behind it from just in front of the circular stuck out bit of engine casing and use the socket set (again 17mm) to remove the crash bung and bolt, sliding the bolt back in place as before.
The belly pan should now be free to remove.
I've had a look at the engine now the belly pan is off, it seems dry if grubby (will clean and talc tomorrow except for the bottom corners of the oil cooler (which doesn't look great itself tbh) where the hoses attach, these are darker, warm, wet and oily.
I have a spare cooler, however it's in similar visual condition to the one thats on. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.
