Feeling prepared for the test?

Note that he'll ask the questions about changing oil etc. at the beginning of the test, not the end. The pillion questions are at the end.

To change brake fluid you take the top off the brake fluid reservoir, undo the bleed nipple and pump the old fluid out whilst putting new fluid in the reservoir, that's probably as much detail as you'll need to know.

To refill the oil, you'll notice a small cap at the bottom bit of the engine, undo this, it might come out with a dipstick, and pour more oil in, so that the oil level is between the maximum and minimum level lines.

I can't go into much more detail as I don't know what bike you have. You will need to point and show him where the oil filler cap is, so try and find it.

At the start he may also ask you questins such as what would you check regularly before going out riding ... and as someone suggested in here (cannot remember who) just remember BOLTS

- Break fluid level
- Oil level
- Lights (all workign and clean)
- Tyres (pressure and no nails/tears...)
- Suspentions and chain tension

When is your test?

No.

There is no way that you can fail no matter what you say in answer to the maintainance questions. That's the case on the car test anyway, imagine it's the same for bikes.

You will get a minor though.

When I did my test (3 weeks ago) I was asked how I would check the chain for signs of wear.

I asked the examiner "Honest answer or proper answer?"

He said proper, so I told him about consulting the handbook for tension, where to adjust, making sure lubes. checking sprocket for signs of wear etc etc.

He said OK, what would the honest answer have been?

So I told him "Get my boyfriend to have a look, he's a mechanic!"

He was still smiling when we got back, and I passed this time..... Wink
