I had a phone call this morning from Bikesafe London after filling in their online form.

How lucky is this? The woman asked when i'd like to do the course to which I replied as soon as possible, I asked her how I pay, basically do I pay on the day or over the phone, she then said that I have to pay today over the phone, anyway she told me to wait a second and went to speak to her boss, she asked my age and said that they're giving a place away to someone my age on that particular days course. How good is that? Smile

Free Bikesafe course for me on the 2nd of August. Smile How happy am I? Smile

Nice one, I found a link re. this the other day and went onto the Strathclyde Police website, but there wasn't really much posted about it.

Is this a good and recommended course to go on?

Does it reduce your insurance premiums?

Who can tell me a bit more about what's involved in it - PLEASE? Wink

It's an excellent course to go on, if you possibly can.

Basically, the police will go through some of the theory with you and then take you out on the road and watch you riding. They will give you tips.

The plan is to make you as safe as possible.

When I did it I was told "We don't condone speeding, but this is the real world and you're going to do it anyhow. We want to teach you how to do it as safely as possible."

Laughing Laughing

Best thing was the number of cars who flashed me to let me know that I had a traffic car behind me when I was doing 90 on a dual carriageway.

Bikesafe is not a training course, it is an assessment done of an individuals riding by serving Police Officers coupled with presentations on other traffic accident related and motoring matters.

Bikesafe is not a recognized training course, it is designed to simply give riders a taster of what can be achieved with further training by providing a few hints and tips and of course it is a good PR exercise for the Police as well.

Most Bikesafe assessors/instructors are not themselves qualified instructors, although some have done things like the RoSPA diploma, and many forces are coming in for criticism for allowing riders to exceed the speed limits by up to 40 MPH or encouraging inexperienced riders to go faster than they really feel happy at, but if you go with the attitude that it will be nothing more than a taster of what advanced riding is all about then you will not be disappointed.

Most insurance companies do not recognize Bikesafe for discount purposes.

You lucky man! I enjoyed doing the course. As T.C. says they assess your riding and take you through a number of situations in the classroom.

On our rideout we did not exceed the speed limit and T.C's observation that they encourage you to go faster is quite near the truth. On my rideout, through the leafy lanes of Herfordshire, I overtook a car and pulled in. My police rider said that I should have overtaken the next car. I told him that that would have been dangerous as it was coming up to a junction on the right and if someone had come out of their fast the car would have hit me! He stood corrected!

Generally, I have noticed my powers of observation are improved and that I ride smoother.

Enjoy! Thumbs Up

You can get a 10-15% discount from Carol Nash and Devitts. I wouldn't so it with the thought of getting cheap insurance - that's what IAMs & RoSPA are for Asides from teaching you to ride safely obviously..
