Okay, so I've been riding for a few years but never been any good at looking after my bikes!

I have just brought a 600 bandit all shiny and I want to keep it this way.. And actually look after it properly.

I need to get some chain lube, usually I just buy any old stuff but looking on the interweb there is so many types.

Whats the difference? What stuff do I need/you guys recommend?

Personally i prefer a dry chain lube as you don't get much fling from it.
Everybody has their own personal favourite though for different reason's they all have their good and bad points.

Loads of people say old engine oil is the best/cheapest chain lube but doesn't it fling like buggery?

Best oil is gear oil 80-90 but I've used old engine oil in the past.

What I do is brush the oil in on the top letting it work its way down and wipe off any excess......I do this when the bike will be laid up over night reducing fling but it can be messy especially in and around the front sprocket area.

Best bet is to use a dry chain lube or similar, and make sure you keep on top of cleaning your chai every so often,no point lubing a chain that's covered in shit, stopping the lube from getting to where its meant to go.

i tend to use norris chain lube, its sticky has all hell but providing you leave it 15 mins before riding you dont seem to get any fling issues. the silkolene chain lube is the same.

I used some WD40 to clean the chain with a soft tooth brush once every few of weeks (lube once a week), relube after i am done cleaning and the chain and sporckets stain in good nick for a good long while

EP90 - generous squirts, leave for a while, then get bike on main stand, turn rear wheel with one hand, grip chain with a folded piece of kitchen roll with the other and wipe excess off by turning wheel. Clean with diesel on kitchen roll after ride, and then apply oil as above. There won't be much fling ime, and chain & sprox will last well.

It was more of a 'inb4' post....generally I use a mixture of wax/oil/scottoiler/neglect. Not in that order obviously, that would be too much hard work, neglect mostly....this thread reminds me, I need to lube my chain.

Engine oil will do the job as well as anything out there if you dont mind the 'fling' and your front sprocket cover will build up with black crud like you wouldn't believe.
Personally I commute so my bike never gets cleaned and its far to easy to just throw some used engine oil on there...
Have about 40,000 litres of the stuff knocking about anywho Laughing

If you commute come rain or shine I wouldn't go the chain wax/spray route, it is expensive, doesn't last in the rain and needs regular reapplication. If it is a toy then you probably don't want dirty engine oil seeping down your swingarm and out of your sprocket cover.

As a commuter, I like clean engine oil in a scottoiler. No noticeable fling and unlike scottoiler oil, it doesn't dissolve and wash away in the rain to let your chain go rusty. Also, I have about 3 gallons of cheap diesel engine oil and no suitable car to use it in.

Every now and then I'll clean the chain with paraffin and relube with gear oil. The gear oil does fling, although I over-apply and am a bit lazy in wiping it off/letting the paraffin dry first so that's probably the main reason.

out of curiosity, what grade oil do you use Donny?
Maybe because I am using 'Used' engine oil which may have degraded through use it's more fling'able?
Can't say I love the flung/dirty look however I like free/very cheap healthy chain more Smile

The oil in my Scottoiler is Asda's cheapest 15w40 diesel oil. It is taking forever to get through, I wrote off the car for which it was intended years ago.

It doesn't fling when applied by scottoiler, well it probably does, but I never have any oil land on my tyre. It does fling when applied by brush/rag which is why I use gear oil (still flings, but not quite as much).

Don't be under the impression that my sparkly engine oiled chain is attached to a wonderfully clean and crud free bike, anything near the front sprocket cover or on the swingarm near the chain is a greasy mess, but that is mostly due to brush applied oil after a chain wash. I'm quite partial to the greasy, neglected look so the filth doesn't bother me Wink .
