Any recommendations for software to do it?

I've got a demp of Pinnacle Studio and that starts it but keeps hanging at various points. The only other programs I've been able to find have been limited demo's that will only do a minute or two - not much use for a 2 hour film.

I've got a CD full of useful AVI/MPG/DVD utilities at home. If you're still stuck later on I'll try and sort something out for you. Thumbs Up

There's a freeware program called BBMpeg that does it.

It works well. I've used it as a plugin for Adobe Premiere, but they provide a standalone version too.

Can recommend TMPGEnc program (do a google for it).
Basic version is freeware, should do MPEG1. For DVD and SVCD you need to buy the Plus version (as there's only a 30 day trial for this feature with the basic).

For other info I check this site https://www.dvdrhelp.com - look under the tools section, there's a few tutorials too.

The problem with .avi is that sometimes the sound is kept under a divX file, so if you use TMPGEnc you have to extract and convert each file separately which when put together can cause synchronization problems with the sound coming later than the picture. Smile
