The best easy access ISA I can find is 1.5% which is barely keeping up with inflation so I'd effectively be losing money. The best fixed 3 year ISA I can find is 2.45% which is still pathetic.

I've got £5,000 in an investment fund which has seen a 9% return last year and 9% this year. I'm considering moving it to the Henderson European Growth Fund which has been getting a 30-40% return the last couple of years.

Anything else I can do with it? I don't mind it being locked away but would like to cash out in 3 years.

40% has to be mega high risk doesn't it?? How many weeks of the year does it have to be at 40% to qualify as actually BEING 40%? 51? 50? 40? 30? 1?

Not sure I'd risk it personally. The world and his wife would have their dosh in there if it was legit.

The standard advice on high yield shit is only go there if you can stand to lose the stake.

I'm currently storing mine with Barclays, they do a 5.6% which is alright but only valid on things higher than £150,000, otherwise its 3.9%

Fuck knows what it is though, I went in and asked Thumbs Up

Invest in government bonds. US or Japan if you can, they're in massive debt but they'll never go bankrupt so you should see a nice return. Only saying this because I read an article about it once, never invested myself.

Looking up that Henderson fund shows a 23.7% three year cumulative performance. But from my understanding (and thats not a lot) that is only like getting 7-8% AER. Which is still good compared to a cash isa but the fund manager will normally take a percentage upfront as well as an annual percentage, plus the risk that it could be invested badly.

July I believe. Not sure if rates will improve - but the amount you can put in yearly [presuming it remains the same or similar] will dramatically increase to 15k cash annually.

Personally with 10k, particularly if its your main savings/important to you, i'd take the cowardly option of ISA'ing it. Things offering silly returns usually do so because there are great risks to get such to get such profits, or more so, the investors take great risks.

I'd rather my chances investing in high-end poker players than a lot of investment funds.

Peer-to-peer lending is a possibility, have a look at Zopa or Ratesetter. Not as risky as it sounds, as your money is spread over hundreds of borrowers and they're now regulated, although not compensated like banks, they have their own funds to cover you if someone defaults.

In July the ISA limit increases to £15k and there's nothing to say that there'll be higher rates.

If you wanted to go for ISAs then you could put £5,940 in an fixed rate cash ISA now that allows top ups so you can put the rest into the ISA in July or you could put £5,940 in a variable rate cash ISA now and then transfer it a fixed cash ISA in July along with the rest of your £10k.

3 years is a short term investment and the Henderson European Growth Fund aims to seek long-term capital growth. If you've been tracking the price, yield and return and you believe that now is a good time to invest for a short period then that's your decision to make. But from your original post I don't think that is the case and you've just been attracted by the figures of 30-40% that you've not given your source for those numbers.

Whatever you choose to do is a gamble. Me? I'm betting on Bitcoin and altcoins. Mr. Green

why not invest in the "gavcarter academy of failed investments" I personally guarantee a 0% return and I will appear to be "considerably more tanned" than when you invested. May also have a new bike.

Seriously.

Never really understood investments other than there is normally a good amount of risk involved - probably much better in a savings account ( used to be worth opening separate accounts to keep them under the taxable limit)

A couple of years ago I invested with an online only account. It was a fixed term amount, and I got a decent return. Get the Financial Times and have a look in their investment section...I got that one from them myself.

It might be worth looking at some banks / building society fixed rate ISA's, I got a decent rate with my bank because I've been with them a million years. There are some good offers about, you just gotta do some homework...like I say Financial Times is a bloody place to look.

I wouldn't dump all my money into one account if you do go stocks n shares, I'd split it like Ste suggested. Thumbs Up Most FA would suggest no less than 5 year investments to get a decent return. Though there are some stocks n share ISA's that may be up your alley.

You missed out the bit where it breaks down all the time, costs you a fortune in time and money for repairs etc. There's a downside to everything of course.

depends on what you find, how often you use it etc. i still say classic cars are a safe investment.

i read somewhere last year a barn find Aston Martin went for £300k. not saying you'd get as lucky as that, but £10k could provide a decent buy.

Have you thought about joining the Funding Circle?

https://www.fundingcircle.com/

Basically you lend to small businesses, they ask for what they want and why and you can "bid" to invest in them at a rate that you want.

Payments come back to you monthly (with interest) so if you don't need the cash yourself you could maybe invest in more than one business?

Rates seem to be around 8-9% typically.

Buy a lock up garage and rent it out? Depending on where you live = how much they cost.
Probably better as a longer term investment, but might be worth a look.
