Hello,

I have a 2004 CBR600F (fuel injected) I am planning on buying a "slip on" exhaust for it. I am an absolute amateur at mechanics, will I be able to remove the can & link pipe without removing the side fairing or will that have to come off?

I have never owned a fully faired bike before so I'm not sure how much work is involved in removing the side panel?

You do not need to remove the side panel.

But it helps.

IIRC all CBR6F4s and is are the same. Off my head:

All hex head bolts.

Two near the air intake.

Two on the inside of the V-piece

One under the indicator.

One bolt where the R&G crash bung goes.

One bolt into the infill panel above the air intake.

One bolt at the bottom just behind the clutch cover/oil glass.

At the frame there is also an arrow piece which slots into a rubber hole, grab both sides firmly and yank.

Thats it.

The OEM can is held on my a 2 bolt clamp and if it is OEM will contain a gasket and also the pillion foot peg bolt.


The major problem you will have is this:

The CBR6F4 had/has a centre stand and the OEM exhaust has a tab built in to keep the centre stand in place out of the way of the chain.

Therefore you need a way in which to keep the centre stand down.

A car U exhaust clamp will work if you bolt a L piece of steel to them and brace it so it doesn't bend.

Plus the F4I versions MIGHT have a sensor in the exhaust (the F4 carb version didn't) which you'll have to put back in.

I guess they can be bought with the centre stand bit on the link pipe though? I'll have a look around.

Another question I have is about he suspension, I know that the rear shock is adjustable, I have the tool to do this under the seat in the tool bag. How easy is it to adjust? I'm 6'3 so would be good to jack it up.

Many link pipes do have tabs, the problem is two fold, they are too short and they are not braced. Meaning either they won't be anywhere near the centre stand (though you can weld something onto the centre stand or extend it with some steel).

The problem is the bracing, in that without the bracing they have a straight single line weld which means the tab will bend back and forth each time you use the centre stand, which does a Uri Geller and bends them and causes them to snap (requiring welding. You can 'brace' them by putting a couple of ball bearngs in them which acts as a brace and araldite them in (I used no more nails)

You can't change the ride height, you can change the pre-load and rebound, this will not really change the ride height, you can always get jack down plates, but considering I would regularly grind the CBF6 pegs down on my commute I wouldn't advise it! Longer dog bones decrease the ride height, shorter ones will do the reverse but will affect the geometry of the bike and therefore some of the handling charactoristics
