Well, the truck is getting there.
Lifted the engine in today, need to fab a couple of mounts as it's a Swift GS engine, with SU carb. Should be quite nippy when done as it's on a 5 speed 413 gearbox, with a 410 Transfer Box.

Will need to look into some more green lanes once It's back on the road too as I got bored of all the ones around Medway. Will have to meet up with some of you lot.

Bit of a trek but it's pretty much the best offroad centre in the UK. Mr. Green

No, it's too revvy for an off roader and in that SJ it would need lower gearing. 103bhp from 1300cc is only ever going to be rev happy, and is not what you need for mud plugging.

If you want to play with a G13B then keep it in a swift or a Mini, and blow into it for more lols!

Hopefully it'll be okay. 1324cc engine, Sami 5 speed gearbox, and 410 Transfer box should make it a torque monster(ish). Laughing

I think so. I bought it for £50. It's aluminum and been made to a really good spec, but at some point someone has cut out one of the cross rails and looks like they've had a winch bolted to the top of it, when it's meant to go on a plate, inside the bumper.
Will eventually buy one, but want a good winch that'll actually pull it out.

'Scrap cars wanted' cars are fun for testing the strength of the bumper and the power of your car. Mr. Green

When you're with someone else who has a winch bumper fitted then you can find out which car is most powerful and has the best grip by seeing who can push who.

When I had the Feroza, even though it only had an A-bar, whenever any of us got stuck while green laning, the person behind would just smash you right up the rear. We all had rear door mounted spare wheels which helped soften the blow. Hence the reason I've put mine back on the tailgate. Which admittedly, I should really re-enforce.

Laughing Just get a tow rope or KERR rope!

If someone else can smash into the back of your truck and that gets you unstuck then you've not been going fast enough. Razz Momentum is your friend. Mr. Green

You know about getting yourself unstuck by rocking back and forward by changing quickly from first gear to reverse repeatedly?

The Feroza got stuck quite easily to be honest, where it was on front shafts, you couldn't jack it up too high without risking one falling out, and because it was quite long wheel base for such a small truck, it used to belly out a lot.

The SJ feels SO much better (even though I've only had it off road once).
I'm tempted to weld up the rear diff, as I have a spare axle in my garage.

I kinda regret not going down the Derv power route really. Think I might start collecting the bits to go over to a 1.9 Peugeot engine.

Is there a lockable diff (with different axles if necessary) that can be swapped in?

Locking diffs are made of win, without them (or a welded one) getting stuck is far too easy. I wouldn't be too confident of a welded diff lasting particularly long if you're using it on anything other than loose surfaces.

Can get axles with lockable diffs but they are mega money.

It's on big mud tyres at low PSI, going to be going up to 30" tyres as soon as I can, so I cant see them having much grip on the road anyway.
Tempted to try out a welded rear diff, I've a spare axle if it does shit it's self.

My only question is, will it still drive, if the rear diff blows up?
I.E, if I was to have it in 4x4, would the drive go to the front wheels? If not, I'll be needing a tow home. Laughing

Pretty sure it would still have fwd but I'm not 100% certain on that as the how the transfer box works may or may not be relevant. When I killed a VW Toerag, it ended up with a dead transfer box, a dead gearbox (forget what gear it was stuck in), no drive to the back axle but it still had fwd.

Before welding the diff, see what the opinion is about it on a suzuki 4x4 forum or on difflock. If a welded diff is a problem on tarmac then fitting a set of free wheeling hubs would be a solution to that.

Or just stick it on a trailer, take it to offroad sites using your van, have much more fun than greenlaning and you don't have to worry about needing the suzuki to be able to drive home after you've spent the day (or weekend) abusing it at KORC. Mr. Green

Looks sweet. Love the light weight and simplicity.

My sportrak has been awaiting bodywork welding for a while. But when I'm using it again I'm considering welding the front diff. One of the auto hubs failed so I fitted manual locking hubs. So I can drive with just one locked and a welded diff for 3wd. Or lock both for really boggy bits. Welding the rear will make it a pita on the road and put a load of strain on the rest of the driveline. Depends how far you are from the lanes.

My skid car/only means of transport at the moment has a welded diff. It's fine, the only problem is that everyone looks at you like your car is broken when you try any slow speed cornering or anything in a carpark.

Hate to say it but I told you so Twisted Evil Derv is the way to go specifically 1.9td pug with Ldv pilot gearbox Mr. Green

I do like what you have done with the truck as everyone else has said it looks like a little tonka toy, a set of big wheels/tyres will finish it off well, if you go derv I recon a stack pipe behind the cab, fuelling/boost turned up and some black smoke haha

It's getting a stack pipe anyway. Mr. Green

Thought about bigger wheels/tyres. But with the current set up, it's going to be a real rock-lobster. Bigger wheels will push the gearing up again.

1324 engine
Sami 5 speed gearbox
410 Transfer box
410 axles

It gives a very high final drive ratio, will only have a top speed of around 50mph, as the Sami gearbox is shorter geared than the 410 gearbox, as the difference is made up in the Transfer box and diffs I believe.

Cant wait for some 5th gear pull away action. Laughing

Yeah stack pipe's rock, make sure you get one with a flappy top or have it curved so the outlet faces down a little bit, had an open stack on my old recovery truck and starting it up after the rain it would shoot out a fountain of rusty dirty water like a geyser!
