They're wicked trucks.
I've got my winch rope here. 100ft of double braid dyneema.
Been trying to do a spliced eye on one end for the winch hook, but can't bloody do it! So I've settled with a Surgeon's Loop knot, and a couple of rope/wire u-clamps to hold it on.

Coiled my rope onto the winch drum tonight. After all the cutting and failed attempts at splicing I've ended up with about 90 feet.
The hook is attached with a steel thimble and a double-surgeon's loop.
I've added a pair of new U-bolt clamps for extra strength, and a small knot in the end to take the slack of the 'dead' side of the rope.

Tested it by pulling my Transit sideways on the drive. Winch has got some grunt to it!

Sat on the PC, notification came up on the Kent Off Road Club. A Discovery stuck solid in the mud on a byway near Sheppey.

It's 5 mins up the road from me, so like a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, I jumped in the rubber duck and headed out.

When I got there, I saw the disco proper stuffed in the mud. A Pajero had already had a go at pulling it out but the guys only had 1 4m strop and a couple of shackles.

Tried the SJ winch, but SJ didnt weigh enough. I ended up just sliding along the tarmac, up the kerb, and along the mud. Disco didnt move.

Stuck my 6m strop on the Disco, and had a few shots at 'snatching' it. But again, with the weight difference, all I did was give myself wiplash! Laughing

In the end, it took 3 strops attached together, and a fucking beast of a P38 Rangerover to drag this thing out of the mud.

Was a real good laugh, and I made a few friends while doing it.

Video of one of the lanes I rode on Saturday

some friends rode it in Sunday and found the following, on my video the location is approx 11 seconds in, approached from the opposite direction

I cant work out what they've done there...

Tried to go for a cheeky 'off piste' drive, or genuinely slipped off the edge.

Anyway, how will the jacked up disco driver ever live it down?
I thought those one life live it Disco driver's/vehicles were invincible? Laughing

Would have liked to see a pic of the modded P38 that saved the day though!

It's also damn hard reading this thread to decide if riding a bike or driving a truck would be the most laughs off road? I'm thinking 4wheels with a group of other hero's just edges it though?

P38 was standard, and on road tyres.
It was just a V8 4L weapon, with >2ton of weight to throw around. Laughing

Having done both 'sports', you certainly get more fun-per-mile out of a 4x4.
Unfortunately the ramblers/dog walkers dislike the 4x4s because apparently we damage the byways and make them difficult to walk on.

Also having done both, well, sat passenger in 4x4, I would also say that the car is more fun per mile and also, takes more time, so you get more time doing the activity, so the fun lasts longer as well.

Bikes are far too easy to just ride down a green lane, at a sensible pace, I have a loop I do on my bike, it's about an hour on either 250. It took us four hours in my mates Discovery. It's more fun because you can have a laugh with your mates while going down the lane, even at 10-15mph, as a novice, feels fast and bumpy enough to need some concentration. Only issue is that when it's wet, the 4x4 digs ruts, which then other 4x4's follow, making them deeper, meaning standard Disco's and such, like my mates, start to struggle, dif kept bottoming out, meaning the vehicles get more and more modified, making the lanes more chewed up for others.

Then, I come along on my bike, I avoid the car ruts, so ride down the centre, thus creating a third rut in the centre, until eventually a few years down the line, all the green lanes end up as just three ruts that are impassable in standard vehicles, 4x4's bottom out and bikes just get stuck with a tramline affair going on with footpegs being pushed up out the way the walls of the ruts so you have to paddle like an idiot.

I much prefer pay and play sites now, at least they get maintained. I'd go round with a spade myself, but it's just too much for one kid on his own. On the other hand, some lanes are easy enough to take a normal car down, after four days of insurance, I decided the Micra was a rally car. Laughing

Quite.

Greenlanes are where you can have a go at gentle offroading for free. Then if you like it and want to do some actual offroading then you take yourself to a pay and play site.

Do that and you'll very quickly lose interest in greenlaning!

I've done P&Ps, and I still enjoy laning a lot!
We're quite lucky to have a massive web of byways around Kent, and a lot of them are extremely difficult.

I do however, feel a lot more comfortable trying technical things like cross axles when on a site, because if I do roll it, or break my truck, I can leave it there and collect it on a lorry later.

Removed my rear bumper before it fell off.
Going to make up (or have made) a nice ally tube one, to go with the front bumper.

Annnnd, it's gone.

Sold it last week. Delivered to the new owner. Sad

Buying a house was a great idea. But it also kinda sucks.

Got strong money for the truck. But the buyer got a fucking epic little truck too!

Sad to hear, as yellow truck was pretty epic!
But you had plenty of fun out of it, and I bet there is a good strong ready market for already seriously prepared for off road vehicles like that!

Hope your house and garage project go well, and at least you have your tuned and ultra pimped transit that's multi talented as a work horse, bike transporter and camper van all in one! Smile

I hope the 30bhp pit bike is still going to stay though and the Chaly, as those are just way to cool to ever sell IMO!

They are pretty decent trucks.
It cost me £200 (Very cheap!)

Spent some cash today fitting 4 new tyres at work. I went for the standard size, in a Falken A/T pattern, because they are quiet on the road, but still offer enough grip for light green laning.

As this is my only hack, I can't really be having another SJ style truck, with no carpets or driving comforts. Haha!

Tomorrow I am off to my mates yard to pull a leather interior out of something like a Jag or a BMW to sort out mine, as the seats are all ripped.
Will be cutting a box out of the exhaust which is blowing, and welding some straight pipe into it.
Gotta sort out the throttle as it's a bit stiff. And I need to convert the AC over as it's still on the old R12 set up. Once that's done, I can gas it up, and have AC in a car again, for the first time in 6 years. haha
