New to biking but intend doing my own maintenance. Both the owner's manual and Haynes keep referring to cleaning items in solvent, sometimes specifying it mustn't be flammable. What are classed as solvents in this context, petrol, paraffin, white spirit? What do other people use on oil and air filters etc.?

Regards, John

Petrol, paraffin and white spirit are all flammable solvents. Water is of course the universal solvent.

depends on what you want to clean. if its just an oily coponent i just use petrol/white spirit.
more delicate things such as air filters have cleaners developped especially for them

Thanks, folks.

DaFrostyOne, any brand names I should be looking out for for cleaning the air filters? I came across one called PJ1 Foam Air Filter Cleaner.
