https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-2328578/How-safe-new-contactless-bank-cards.html

I got one come through my door a couple of weeks ago. I haven't used it yet, and looking at the information on the back of the sheet of paper that came with it, nor will will I. The fact that you - or a thief- can use it to make payments of up to £20 without entering a pin-number puts me off straight away. And I really don't like the idea that the card can be read even when it's in my wallet.

What is this? Some kind of government surveillance scheme? If Santander won't give me a normal chip&pin card I'm switching banks.

The risk is all on the bank. If your card is stolen and the thief uses the contactless feature, the bank will refund the money and take the hit themselves.

I love the contactless feature. Makes small purchases much quicker.

Extremely convenient, seems like a good scheme to me. Banks simplifying things for once and still people complain.

Not sure why you'd worry someone would steal your card and then buy themselves a cup of coffee without needing your pin. Surely they could make much bigger purchases online without your pin!?

And you'll enjoy a contactless card with whichever bank you switch to. Mr. Green

Once upon a time the banks swore blind there was no possible way to obtain the PIN number from a credit or debit card. I saw a security expert obtain the data from a test card (something to do with hexadecimal data permanently stored on the card) and usage history in an hour. And I remember him saying something like "I don't have the right equipment here, but.."

And it's not just going to be £20, if you don't even know someone is "borrowing" your card they could use it a dozen times before you notice, and is the bank really going to pay up or are they going to say "we don't believe you"? Of course there is CCTV these days, but footage is often blurry or the tapes get wiped, and sometimes it's the people working at a shop who are doing the scamming. Remember card-skimming?

I can imagine someone walking down the street with a card scanner and *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* making "transactions" without even seeing the cards.

I suggest you lock the front door and shut the curtains. They really are out to get you.

That sounds exactly the same as if your card is used fraudulently, be it online or in an actual shop.

In my experience, they refund with pretty much no questions asked and just send you a form to sign to say that it wasn't you who used made the transaction(s).

IIRC stinkwheel made the point once that he had kit to read tags in a cow's stomach(s). The idea being that it would be relatively easy for someone to walk down the road scamming cards.

Plus I don't believe the banks will put their customers first and auto refund any scam. They will presume the customer is guilty unless the customer can prove they are innocent. Go on, say that will not happen.

So, op, no I don't trust contactless.

I do the contactless thang all the time at two local BP garages when fueling up teh bike. Coupled with the fact they let us keep lids on means we're in and out like total ninjas.

Tin foil wallet, no seriously. As it blocks the RFID signal.

HK has had contactless cards for years and years with very few problems and we use them for everything fast food, bus fares, 7-11.

Pay at pump FTW. Don't even need to go in and engage with the dribbling pump jockey.

I think it's great and use it whenever I can Thumbs Up I use a credit card so really am not that bothered if it's ever hacked. I used to have a mini card that attached to my phone case but I just got weird looks using it so I stick to the actual card.

If you contact(no pun) your bank they will remove the feature,
Some may send another card.

Drilled a hole in mine to break the circuit. Only because I went to pay for fuel, the cashier took the card, scanned it and it allowed the £40 payment of fuel.

I'd be cool with £10-£20 but higher without any quibble, negatron sir.

It shouldn't work on transactions over £20.

As far as I know as I barely use my contactless - its £20 in a specific period (otherwise you have to enter your pin) and sometimes they still request use of pin.

Card scanner won't work... The contactless moves money from an account to a merchant. The card itself doesn't store cash that can be taken. That's why nearly all credit card fraud relies on receiving goods/services.

Indeed, their reply was we can send you a new card.

They did, it got drilled. I'll try and drag out the statement as it sayd "Contactless BGP" then the ID

I have come to understand that if something bad can happen, it will happen to me.

I like my contactless card, no more faffing around at the pub with a pocketload of change, just tap your card on the reader, grab your drinks and go.

Also useful at the WHSmiths I get lunch from whilst at work. Their chip and pin process takes ages (honestly, upwards of a minute) to dial in, but contactless is instant.

The card doesn't work for transactions above £20, I tested that - combined with fact that anyone trying to read my cards whilst in my wallet walking down the street is going to have a hell of a time working between my RFID work pass, Oyster Card, the chip out of my bPay band and my actual debit card.

I have an app on my phone that can steal the data from the chips very easily, I make a point to the lads on the pub by reading out the long number from their card, expiry date etc. just by me swiping my phone past their wallet that is in their pockets.

You live in Hong Kong? Cool. Thumbs Up
I won't be wearing a tin-foil hat any time soon, but I think I will put my debit card in a tin-foil sleeve if I can't obtain a conventional debit card.
