Hi all

On my 91 XJ600 the fork seals have failed on one fork and has leaked onto the brakes.

The brakes have gone spongy now. I have a new set of pads and seals to go on. Question is, would the fork oil cause the caliper seals to swell and leak causing the spongyness?

Should I change them as well, I only did it a year ago, massive pain in the arse it was.

The problem is most likely to be crud in the seal groove or pitting in the stanchions. The first just requires cleaning out (angled head dental pick is ideal for this), the second is a little trickier to rectify

Yeah, It just started all of a sudden. There is no pitting or gouging, fork surface looks good.

I had a go at cleaning the seals using a home made "sealmate" type thing, but it didnt work. To be honest it was pissing out at a fair rate. Just waiting for my 19mm hex key and ill get the old seals off, just wondering about the brakes.

Ideally you need to replace the pads once they've been contaminated, according to the manufacturers/garages who want your business.

I tend to take a Paddyesque view of these things and soak them in solvent then dress the surface with an abrasive

Yeah, its a twin disc so its only on one side, normally id leave them but they are wafer thin so makes sense change at the same time.
