Hi guys,

My lovely commuter won't start up and I'm not too sure why. I came on it yesterday and all seemed fine. This morning I take the locks off etc. etc. and no start.

The indicators work, but no front light, and the volume of the horn is still loud so I'm not sure if it's the battery.

There's no evidence of tampering or cut cables (bike is locked outside the front of my house).

Any ideas? The fuel tank is half full too.

Shocked That's on odd thing to do to your bike Shocked

Headlight won't be on, because it runs off the alternator. How certain are you that it's not the battery?

What happens when you try and start it? Does anything happen at all? Does the check engine light flash?

Make sure your sidestand is up, and that it's not in gear. Mess with the clutch a bit while pressing the starter. Good luck Smile

When I turn the bike on the engine light comes on then goes off after a few seconds. When I try turning the engine on its just trying to start up but nothing is happening.

Not sure if it is or isn't the battery. Going to have a look at the battery when I get home from tonight.

Checked everything else and can't find a thing out of the norm.

Thanks.

Is your fuel tap on? Have you tried bump starting it?

How old is the battery? First thing to do is establish if the battery is dead or not. if you haven't already got one, get a good optimiser charger and it will tell you as soon as you wire it up whether the battery is putting out enough to enter the charge cycle, or indeed if it's totally dead.

If battery is ok after a charge, try again, and get a multi meter to check the output when idling, and when revving at 5k rpm. Lots of threads on here to give you specific guidance.

There are a few things it could potentially be, but you need a working battery to start fault finding

Could be worth a try depending on how far from home you are. If the battery is very low then it might still bump start and get you home, but if it's totally dead then it might conk out on you mid-trip (as happened to me once) so be aware of that

Not sure on the fuel tap, something to check when I get home.

The battery is as old as the bike I think, when I bought it there was no mention of new parts added to it that could be at fault for it not working.

I'll check the battery tonight, my partners dad has 2 motorbikes so I can only assume he will have the necessary tools to check.

As for the bump start, what is that? Moving the bike while trying to get the engine started?

Sounds like battery could be at the end of its life then, if it's 5 years old. Depends how it's been ridden/maintained though.

To bump start it, sit on it, turn the key to "on", put it into second gear and then try and get the bike moving by pushing it or rolling down a hill. You'll need to hold the cutch in whilst it's in gear.

When you're rolling at about 5 mph, let your clutch out. If it starts this way, it's most likely your battery.

Turns out some cretins had vandalised the bike. Breaking the fairing and removing the spark plug.

Didn't notice until I took the fairing off the side and noticed a loose cable and no plug.

That's infuriating, but at the same time it's only a few quid for a new plug so an easy fix Thumbs Up

Why remove a spark plug to vandalize a bike??

Did they piss in the cylinder or something? Eh?

Possibly someone else with CBF trouble nicked the spark plug to get them home.
