Starting Issues - ZXR400

I have a feeling its likely to be a battery issue, had a few with other bikes however I would like to get a second opinion or two.

After riding the bike for around the hour a few days ago and it cutting out often (low idle speed, sorted that parked up in the city) it was brought home with all its lights on and turned off after idling for a few minutes.

The bike was stopped and started a few times throughout the night. There is a previously identified, although thought fixed but cannot test now, issue with the cable from the alternator.

Tonights issue, battery has been fully recharged, placed in the bike, press the button and sounded like it would turn over, got a puff of smoke from around the battery and it went dead. Can't decide if the smoke came off the starter motor or not.

Now I can hear the clicking sound of when a battery is dead and nothing else. Voltage on the battery was showing about 12.9 when in the bike. Its just the puff of smoke thats thrown me.

Anyone able to give me any indication of what to look for?

was it from fuel tap side of bike if so id be checking the starter relay and fuses in it

Try a known to be working battery and check all fuses.
