Dear BCFers,

A dealer has a CBR600f that I'm prepared to buy but the clocks are in KPH, not MPH. Everything else with the bike is supposedly sound and got a clean history since import.

The dealer says that they'll put MPH stickers on the dial so it should be fine, and they themselves have MOT'd it.

Does anybody else do this?

I'm unsure about two things:

1. The legality of it.
2. Seeing the MPH stickers at night over the clock lights

If anybody has experience or other advice I would really appreciate it. This will be my first bike so I don't wanna get burned...

Perfectly legal and the stickers do the job fine even at night.

as above there perfectly fine and legal.

if you don't fancy a stick you can always get a kph to mph converter, it just fit on the speed cable and makes the speedo read MPH

You'll soon remember what 30mph/70mph etc are roughly in KPH anyway, it doesn't take long to get used to.

I have a converter on my ZZR, works a treat for the price they are seems silly not too.

They are so cheap and simple to install I'm always suspicious about bikes being sold without them and without overlay stickers on already..... makes me wonder did it have a converter then it's been removed before sale so they can say "look this 99999999999 on the odometer is actually KM so it's a lot less than it says".

It does however mean the bike is very likely to be an import & might affect insurance.

Depends if it's a model that would be available in the UK anyhow.

If import might be worth checking the headlight isn't Johnnie Foreigner too (bends to the right). If lucky may be just straight on and ok. Dealer may rubber stamp MOT but if not UK spec. may be picked up if taken elsewhere (there was a thread recently).

Except MattSmith95

I'd personally just memorise the conversion to km/h- the easy one to remember is 100km/h is ~60mph (hence why we measure 0-60mph as a performance indicator in England), 90km/h is ~55mph (hence why EU lorries are limited to 55mph) and you can basically work out the rest on the go from there.

Hi

You soon get used to 5/8 arithmatic.

Note that while the speedo isn't an MOT point on the mainland, if you are in Northern Ireland they seem to rather gold plate the regulations and will fail it.

All the best

Keitu
