Been meaning to ask this for ages...

Is there a speed at which indicators legally have to flash?

Mine are too fast since I changed the 'cators and I'm having trouble finding the right bulbs / the right relay to put them back to normal speed.

Ta. Thumbs Up

Shamelessly cribbed from...

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989...

(a) Every indicator (other than a semaphore arm, that is an indicator in the form of an illuminated sign which when in operation temporarily alters the outline of the vehicle to the extent of at least 150 mm measured horizontally and is visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle) shall when in operation show a light which flashes constantly at the rate of not less than 60 nor more than 120 flashes per minute. However, in the event of a failure, other than a short-circuit of an indicator, any other indicator on the same side of the vehicle or combination of vehicles may continue to flash, but the rate may be less than 60 or more than 120 flashes per minute. Every indicator shall when in operation perform efficiently regardless of the speed of the vehicle.

Might help you to stop being a shameless Flasher Bendy Wink

As long as they work I can't imagine anyone being too bothered really.

I once fitted mini winkers to one of my old Aprilia's. Could only get the two front ones to come on and they were flashing so much they were nearly constantly light.

After messing around I found that a GSXR1100 flasher unit worked. Shocked

i think the quicker they flash the better. they are simple off on decives so i should imagine that they spend as much time on as they do off when flashing. a slow blink rate or say 30 per minute means they are off for a full second before flashing again. which could easily be enough time for a car driver to not spot them.
A faster blink rate is more visible and attention grabbing.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me personally, just want to know if they're illegal or not - wouldn't want to be pulled by a bored copper for my frentic indicators and then have them notice the big 'Not For Road Use' stamped on my can. Laughing

As above between 60 and 120 flashes per minute. I have mine flashing fast as well, people pay more attention to them, and the mechanical car flasher units are a lot more robust.

I've had 2 flasher units so far die on me. On my third now and it is a lot faster than the other two. Are flashers meant to pack in so quick or is it some dodgy electrics on my bike?

I think bike flasher relays are universally crap, they are often located where the weather gets at them and are usually the semiconductor based ones which seem to break down. Car ones are about twice as big and work with a proper moving relay that you can squirt with WD40 if it breaks. They are however designed to run with a much higher draw on them and so flash a lot faster when fitted to a bike.

If there is anything more I hate it would be fast flashers, they may well catch my attention, but then my eyes can't be taken off them, they are always there in the corner of my eye! It drives me mad. Smile
