After a brush with a camera on Saturday (got the gruelling two weeks now as I didn't see it flash) I downloaded Trapster for my iPhone but it doesn't seem that good? On two cameras today it only told me when I was literally on top of them and then this afternoon it wouldn't alert me over my music.

Are there any other decent free or reasonably cheap ones out there which are reliable?

In b4 poor obs/yellow box on a pole/kids running out/boxes of kittens in road etc Thumbs Up

I use CamSam Plus on my Galaxy S4 phone and it's pretty good, especially considering the price.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.camsam.plus&hl=en_GB

I don't know whether it's available for Apple iOS though Question

The best app I have found is the 2 EYES at the front of your face....

Any other option is reliant on your GPS being on and reading to within a few yards.
Even on sat nav's you are lucky to get more than 100 yds's notice and on some roads its then pinging all the time....

I normally rely on the eyes but on Saturday I was riding directly in to the blazing sunshine just as it was starting to drop and while i could see the outlines of everything I couldn't see any colours. The road had about 5000 road signs per mile and the camera blended in as just another grey shape at the side of the road.

So while I won't be relying on it and riding with my eyes shut, it may certainly help in the future.

Thumbs Up

The issue with any DB of camera is unless you pay money, they won't include direction info. So the GPS can only alert you on proximity to a camera regardless of which side of the road it is on. Better than nothing, granted, but after so many false positives from camera on other side of the road you'll just start ignoring the warning and be back to square one.

I used the free version of this on a trip to Edinburgh knowing that the A1 and A68 have plenty of cameras to test with. Picked up them all for my direction of travel and some in the opposite direction.

Might buy the full version since it's only 99p.

I'd go for the PocketGPS one if I was on the road a lot. (I only really need warnings when going somewhere new or out of the ordinary i.e. Holidays etc)

Mobile sites often have the vans so they can see you but you'd be hard pushed to see them. Then there's the ones with just the copper with speed gun who does the same. I've even witnessed one police person not wearing hi-viz, so certainly a cash cow and not a safety/speed issue.

Sometimes nice to have a heads-up on approaching the mobile sites.

I travel all over the country and the CamSam database is better than anything else I've tried e.g. Tomtom, Garmin and Inforad (which uses the Pocket GPS database allegedly...). It's a bargain, especially as there are no subscription fees Thumbs Up

With trapster, play with the settings, you can alter how long before the camera it warns you. Also tried Radardroid, but it says all cameras are variable speed limit, only good thing is no mobile data needed, just download the database at home.

Also Waze has fixed cameras but trapster also has "known enforcement points" for the mobile ones. so far it has saved me a few points Embarassed

Yeh I have it set to the maximum but again today it only seemed to pick them up when I was right on top of them, which is fine when I know they are there, not quite so fine when I don't!

I have downloaded Cameralert to try, and I already have Waze but didn't think to use it Embarassed

Thanks for the advice so far!

Thumbs Up

I find Waze is quite good. Only been using it a few months, but seems to have all fixed cameras (with direction) and people are very quick to update on mobile camera/police locations along with any other hazards that may be coming up.

It's a community built satnav, and allows you to report any hazards/traffic/police as you're going along.
