Can you just pitch up at the terminal in Calais and get onto the next available train (with space) without pre booking ? Don't really want to give myself a deadline on the day I return from my trip and the flexi tickets are more expensive. Anyone done this before ?
Cheers

I've never actually done as you describe.

But similar:

Once made a mistake with my return booking, which was a day later, so turned up the day before. I was made to pay for a new crossing, so this is pretty much what you are asking.

Also I've turned up slightly early for a crossing which put me in a different price bracket, all I was asked to do was pay the difference, about a tenner.

This assumes there is space!

I'm sure you can but you'll pay through for the nose for it. But just book as early as possible on the day and turn up any time after that (say you had a puncture) - they'll put you on the next train with space.

Or try it out - ring up now and pretend you're just down the road, how much for a ticket?

Just did a quote on their website - to go today from the UK side, return in a week, £123. Go on Aug 18th (random) for a week and it's down to £98.

That's a surprise if they had space.
I remember getting to the old Sally line ferry in Dunkirk the evening before, and since the weather was poor asked if it would be OK to use the return ticket a day early - and it was fine for no extra charge.
Since then I never book a return, nothing worse that worrying about making it back for a special time. It messes up at least the last day of your break.
With a bike they can always fit you in sooner or later.

I've used it many times earlier and later than my ticket time and never been charged extra. Always the same day though. Check out there T&Cs

I did turn up once in the mini bus without pre booking as the Ferries and just gone on strike. They charged me about 3 x the normal fare and had me over a barrel.

Did exactly the opposite, booked a train at 00:20 Friday morning when I actually wanted 00:20 Saturday morning. So I turned up 24hrs late and ended up paying £120 for the next train. So yes, I expect you can just turn up and pay through the nose for a crossing.

You can get on the next available train if you arrive 2 hours either side of your booked departure, outside of this they charge you, 24hrs later than booked time and you no longer have a booking and you get reamed for a new ticket.

Book a ticket for 2 hours after you presume you'll need to travel, worst case, you have to wait a bit. If you are way to late and they want to charge you a wedge, ask for an exit pass, go back out and get to the ferry terminal and pay £40 for a ticket to get back to blighty.

Yeah, that's because it's August. Never go to France in August. Everything is closed & the French go on holiday. The most annoying thing is constantly being told 'because it's August', by every French person you try & explain a problem to as if 'you should know that it's August & French people go sur la vacances in August.'
It should be in the language guide as the French answer to everything instead of 'tu mais prendre pour un con?'

Ive just come back from a week trip to France and everything was open an normal(normal as in..they still have silly closing times in the afternoon and close on random midweek days)

I think its mainly non-tourist businesses that close for August.

This is the option that I'm going for, I guess they have me over a barrel if I just pitch up and ask for a ticket on the next available train...

Cheers for the input Thumbs Up

Yes, roll up to check in and ask for a ticket, expect £100 each way.
Stop up the road, book a ticket, one way on your phone and it'll be about £80, book it yesterday it'll be about £50

Just out of curiosity, what's open on a Sunday regards shops and fuel ? We will be arriving and leaving France on a Sunday, we will be using mostly major roads on them days to cover the distance quickly there and back (stelvio pass), I know the French when not on strike are quite relaxed on a Sunday, we only plan on booking the hotel for the first night before we leave and then wing it from there using one of the various apps that are available to book up for the following week before returning...

Petrol stations will either be open or of the pay at pump type, only use visa type cards, not mastercard prepay or travel cards at prepay stations.

Fill up at the calais station, just off the train, the price is ok and it's staffed.

Buy food in the uk before you go, there will be limited places to get food on a sunday apart from restaurants and bars.

Fuel should be available on the Autoroutes on Sundays. The pump will probably be automated so have debit cards at the ready.

For shops... France is mostly closed on Sundays.
Although this Carrefour in the middle of Calais is open 09:00 to 13:00 on Sunday.
