Hi,

Anyone got any idea how to see if a bike has had an engine change at any point by checking the engine number?

Thanks,

Dom

As long as the engine number is the same as the number in the log book and its a good engine, I wouldn't bother too much.

I have known of some owners clubs where the engine number series was mapped out by model/year/revisions etc
but it felt like an anorak too far to me.

If that's your interest, an owners club site or forum for the model of bike you have may help

Or, someone made a mistake filling in the v5 application when it was new... Yes, it does happen.

You can send off the v5 with a change of engine number...

I've had countless bikes where the engine number didn't match the v5, most of which had obviously never had an engine change just the usual dvla fuckwittery.

I have also had bikes where the frame number is in the engine number section and vice-versa.

My favourite V5 I have seen so far was

Make: T
Model: A
Chassis no: 01
Engine no: not known
Colour: Multicoloured
Tax Class: Historic

this was for a homebrew wooden pick up truck

Both my road legal pit bikes naturally had engines that didn't match the V5's:

The Masai had a stomp engine swapped in, so I new it wasn't going to match before I even purchased.

The Stomp had its original engine but it didn't quite match the v5, as some of the engines numbers had obviously been wrongly observed when it was issued. 1's instead of I's etc Brick Wall .

In answer to your question. I suppose you really can't be 100% sure unless you bought the bike new.
