My passport has become a little too damaged for use for air travel. Just about ok for the ferries after a bit of questioning.

So... I'm heading back to the UK to get a new one. Unfortunately the fast track still takes a week. Are there any other possible documents I can use for travel to save me wasting 1week+ of holiday? I can only find info about travel documents for non-UK citizens.

Don't think you have any other options going to and from the UK because we aren't part of the Schengen area.

Nothing to do with it. EEA has free travel agreements - officially you don't need an ID, merely just to prove your nationality. Which is why I can get on a ferry with my knackered passport, but planes have stricter rules. An expired ID should be good enough, as should a birth certificate and a bunch of other forms. Just hoping for something more guaranteed as a backup in future (something that doesn't rely on the knowledge and willingness of the border guard).

Never thought I'd say it, but a UK ID card would be quite handy.

My cousin has done a long journey to the passport office once to sit and pay a hundred or so quid to get a passport the same day. Is this what you say takes a week?

Yep... Mainly because mine is a replacement for damaged and not a renewal. Some claim of I might just get a 1 day service depending on how badly damaged it is/isn't.

Urgent passport - need an appointment but can get the passport the same day or within a week.

https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

Emergency passport (temporary) - if your passport is lost/stolen, damaged or expired and you need to leave a country

https://www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document

If you have good reason, you can get a second passport.
Good reason would be regular business travel involving sending passports off to embassies for visa applications etc, or visiting countries where an entrance stamp would prevent, or make difficult, travel in other countries.

Wanting a second passport to make your life easier is not a good reason though, and you gotta be very careful about using two, it's not an internationally accepted thing, just a (British) privilege so you can't swap between passports except in the UK or international areas (i.e. between the departure lounge and passport control in your destination)

The first one is what I'm doing - 1 week service as it's not a renewal (although, may be 1 day if I get lucky). snoosnoo: lost & damaged count as the same thing... Essentially if I turn up with a good condition passport I may get a one day service... Anything else and the fast track is 1 week.

Worst thing is, they refuse to check the forms in front of you, so if you make a mistake or there's something they're not 100% happy with it suddenly takes another week.

The second passport is interesting! I may just be able to wangle one via work.

If I understand what you are saying. A uk resident just needs proof of nationality to travel back into the UK from France, like an old passport?

Well... Like all government stuff that depends where you read about it. Supposedly to travel in the EEA, you need only to prove your nationality and you should be given 'adequate chance' to do so. However, on some UK gov sites you need passport or national ID card and nothing else is accepted.

The rules on planes are stricter - a national ID/passport is necessary.

I suspect a Brit trying to get home on the ferry (esp. with a British accent) would be ok. Trying to go to France may meet more resistance, although I've not shown my passport at all sometimes and others I've been scrutineered.

There's the added bonus of being required to carry ID to drive in most of Europe... and a driving license isn't officially ID.

So, whatever the actual rules, I guess, as always, it just matters who you get on the day...

Same problem here too. I'm going back to UK in 2 weeks time to use Option 1 and get a replacement. I put mine through the wash which has damaged it... it's still usable but unfortuantely, it actually washed off a lot of stamps too...and visas... so it just looks tampered with. I had 2 pages left before it went in the wash, now it looks like I have about 10. Laughing On the eurotunnel it's never been an issue when UK border agency look at it (the french never bother) but flying, the border agency always spend some time looking closely at it.

Hmmm, strange. I'm currently in Spain. I've driven here from Dover, and haven't once crossed a section of land where my passports have seen the light of day.

I had this problem replacing mine a month or two back - all was filled out fine, handed over, paid, told it would be processed ASAP - next thing i'm contacted later and told the passport photos I provided [same ones that were used on my previous passport without problem Laughing] apparently had excessive boarder space - i.e i'm not sat close enough to the camera.

No idea what the issue was as they were taken in a standard photo booth - but after all the waiting and delays it added over a week onto the wait, even using the fast-track service.

UK drivers licence? I went on a battlefield tour when I was a squaddie and we used our Army ID cards apparently they were ok because they were photographic so surely a driving licence should do.

Are you resident outside the UK.
I renewed my passport when I was living in Cyprus.
I did it via the British High Commission website, printed off the forms, filled them in, had them checked by a notary, and posted them off.
All the documentation was sent off to, and dealt with in SPAIN, bypassing the UK totally.
If this process is the same for your country of residence it may well bypass the current delays in the UK passport service!

I did... I've de-registered specifically for this. I would've happily done that, but the 6+ week turnaround would interfere with work... I don't think luxembourg has a passport office in the country hence the problem with them sending it off.

Yeah, me neither. It's more of a theoretical risk - you need to carry ID to cross borders and to drive... They occasionally control the borders around Luxembourg (strangely they control the little roads and ignore the motorways). 99% of the time a driving license covers the driving, but officially you should have ID and a license.

Some time ago I needed a passport fairly urgently and went to Petite France - being born in outside the UK and not having an existing one was further frustrated when they couldn't get hold of my 'reference' - they did still give me a passport, but only a one year one.

Probably different now, as that was pre-11/9.

Isn't the reason they are stricter on air travel requirements because a plane has a much higher risk of getting diverted to a non-EU country in an emergency or foul weather etc?

Petty France - I don't normally correct spelling, but did this time to point out the ridiculousness and irony of the actual spelling.

Dunno, can't imagine diversions out of the EEA are common given it's a fairly contiguous land mass. I think it's just down to the fear of planes being hijacked - you can do a lot with a plane, but a boat is fairly easily contained.

Aviation security has always been a much greater issue as the potential is greater.

It depends where in the EEA you are, but the EEC became the EC which is now the EU, and for international aviations sake, the EU is essentially one country, all governed by the EU and EU-Ops rather than by each individual country.

Except it isn't always. And the UK is governed by the CAA using rules set by the EU. It's a very confusing political clusterfuck.

But diverting outside the EU from within isn't necessarily that uncommon... it depends on where you are. Southern Spain/Itay/Greece are all close to northern Africa. Why you are diverting is as big a factor at the time as to whether you divert within the EU or not.

Domestic flights in the UK do not require a passport, only a form of ID, but I know plenty of domestic flights that have diverted to places like France or Ireland. Ideally though with a domestic flight if you can't divert to relatively near your destination you'll divert back to your starting point.

Already covered above, including the reason why it's not an option.

Anyway! New passport Smile took 4 days to arrive after my appointment and was a relatively simple process apart from the international travel, having to know peopl of 'good standing' and worst of all visiting Peterborough.
