Both about the same cost, the Nikon seems to have the edge ever so slightly on features, any advice? I don't want to spend more than entry level money. Cheers.

Classic advice is to try them and see which 'fits' you best. How it handles, how the menus work etc. I am a Nikon man because I grew up with them and know how they are laid out, but in truth there's nothing in it, and any feature differences are likely to be with features you'll rarely/never use. Both have access to a huge range of quality lenses so you're not likely to make a bad choice. One influence on your choices is if you know someone with a Canon or Nikon with lenses you might borrow.

Super deal here, although the lens is nothing special, a good starter set up.

Hi

I have Canon gear, and fully agree with weasley that choosing a system which is used by people you know.

Canon or Nikon leap frog each other, and the body will be out of date within a short time. Lenses are the expensive bits which take decades to become obsolete.

All the best

Keith

the only thing i would add to this is, nikon use the same mounting system through out the range, F mount. i belive the the nd3100 uses the AF-S, there are some cavieates to this system.

although lenses like AF/AF-D will fit and most likely work, there will no auotfocus due to lack of focus motor in the camera body. You will be able to mount pro lenses but you will get "zoom" issues due to the different sensor sizes the lenses are designed to work with.

any lense that has DX stamped on it will be fine (the d3100 uses nikon DX sensor) in gerenal. my very old d50 came with a AF-S lense so there will be plenty of cheaper second hand lenses around to pick up for the nikon system.

I have little knoledge on the canon side but do know that the lense mounting systen vary on when the camera was produced and what market it was targeted at - ie you can use a pro lense to to ounting systems

I'd go with the Nikon because of it's features.

17.46% more megapixels (14.8 vs 12.6)

Substantially larger sensor (9.01% larger to be exact)

Vastly lower noise at high ISO (919 ISO vs 755 ISO)

More focus points (11 vs 9)

Better over image quality when taking colour depth, dynamic range an low light performance - (Score of 67 vs 62) Source: DxOMark

Considerably higher maximum light sensitivity (12800 ISO vs 6400 ISO)

Better recording quality if you ever wanted to record anything (Nikon can record 1080p @ 24fps vs The Canon's 720p @ 29.97 max)

It's 40g lighter

Faster video autofocus due to phase detection

Marginally better colour depth (22.5bits vs 21.9 bits)

14.01% less body volume.

Slightly wier dynamic range (11.3 Evs vs 11 Evs)

Slighly bigger screen size

Narrower, shorter and thinner.

But as the others said, see which one suits you.

Canon changed their lens mount in the late 1980s when they launched the EF mount. The old and new lens' are dramatically different and not compatible.

However since then they have pretty remained unchanged. They introduced the EF-S lens mount. These are a cut back lens mount which only fit the later crop cameras (ie, not the D30, D60 or 10D which were 1.6 crop factor bodies but cannot use the EF-S lens). But the bodies that take the EF-S lens' will also take the normal EF mount lens'.

All the best

Keith

I have a Canon 1100D and Mum has a Nikon D3100 no difference in quality. Both beginners and both have pleasing results.
I chose Canon because it was £247 on Amazon when I got it. Seems to have shot up to £300

Go to a shop and see which you prefer the feel of. Either choice will be good.
