I apologies for the bad grammar and spelling.

So my mate wanted to get rid of his Ninja as it was to expensive for him to run and insure and was looking for something cheap to commute on.

He saw a Bandit in a South London dealership and decided to trade it in for £1500 plus pay the dealer £250 for it, wasn't to bad it was a '96 Bandit but my mate just didn't get on with it.

He went back to the dealer, he saw a 2005 Burgman 400 with 32k miles on the clock with 1 owner, he came to an arrangement and he traded it back and gave the dealer £300 Rolling Eyes now the Burgman isn't running properly.

When he twists the throttle a plume of smoke comes out the back and it doesn't pull properly, my mate said he tried keeping up with a K3 Burgman 400 but struggled. he then took it to a different dealership in South London and they said it's burning oil

we then took it back to the dealership in S London, and he came out with a few excuses. "it's a high mileage bike so it's expected" my mate said he doesn't think it's high mileage, the dealer even blamed the hot weather?? the mechanic test rode it and reckons the drive belt slipping as well

on Friday gone we checked the oil and it wasn't even registering on the dipstick, so they put 300ml in for it to reach the top part of the dipstick. today being Monday the oil is now pretty much gone.

he's taking it to the dealer tomorrow they're going to spend the day with it. He/ even mentioned replacing the engine with another 400 he's got??? but cant explain why he just can't swap scoots.

My question is. the dealership is saying they'll come to an arrangement but he would have to pay a small contribution to it but wouldn't say how much after repeatedly being asked how much.

apart from my mate being a dick should he really have to pay for this?

It's not fit for purpose. Money back or fixed for free.

Edited for spelling.

How long ago did he get the Burgmann?

Also, does this dealership have big windows? £1750 for a '96 Bandit?

No, I meant he traded in a Ninja worth apparently £1500 and paid another £250 for it.

If its only a week old, it needs to go back. Rogerborg and/or Stinkwheel will put it much better than that though!

Sorry just realized what you meant. this Bandit was "done up" with a load of mods.

They all do that.

No, really, they do, pre 2007, it's a known design flaw. Owners reported filling them, going for a fast run (they tend to get run at wide open throttle) and them burning through the oil and seizing. Suzuki never admitted it or came up with an official fix, but quietly sorted it for the post 2007 models.

The problem is (hopefully) the very short and nearly horizontal pipe from the crankcase vent to the airbox. Take the foam filter out - mine was caked solid with grime which didn't help - and I warrant the bottom of the airbox under the metal mesh will be swimming in oil. If it's not, oopshit, start thinking piston rings or worse.

If the airbox is oiled, it's a relatively easy DIY job. Fortunately the problem on mine was that the airbox was sucking, rather than that the crankcase was blowing.

I disconnected the breather at the airbox end and plugged the airbox hole. The breather hose I tilted upwards over the top of the chassis member that it normally runs under. Huzzah, it didn't start spitting oil; if it had, I'd have lengthened it and run it down under the bike.

The vent in question is at the back of the airbox. There's a rail running across the bike right behind the airbox, and you can see the breather running under it. You could possibly get the breather off with the airbox in situ, but you'll want it out to give it a clean out and to cap off the hole (it's under the filter).

Took a few hours, including head scratching and retrieving bits that I'd dropped inside the tupperware. Problem went away, it ran well afterwards.

Well that sucks. Just checked with him he bought it on the 6th and gone through 2 tankes of oil. He doesn't go on long journeys he only uses it to commute and go see friends within London. He's only done about 120 miles.

We've been reading up on it to and really most people seem to notice a lot of oil being burned on long joureys at high speeds. My friend does the opposite he doesn't do long journeys and I don't think going through 2 tanka of oil in 6 days is right.

The dealers offered to spend 6 hours fixing it guess he'll have to try that lol.

Aww, that sounds excessive for the airbox suckage. Sad

It's quick enough to get the filter element out and have a look though.
