Might want to get your torso looked at, it is not running in alignment with your legs. Dodgy subframe?

New high output stator and a modern Reg/Rec enroute.

New Front brake Cable - never been right the inner is too long
New Choke Cable - it's a bit tight with new bars
Electrical system - Charging is 'iffy' convert to a modern reg/rec
New Tyres - old ones aren't bad but are old and cracks are starting to appear in the sidewalls.
Look at cam cover gasket, slight oil leak - It's a British bike
Repaint - The paint is shitty, it looks alright but really isn't a good job, it has cracks and in places on the oil tank has reacted with the metal, the front mudguard is also a crap reproduction one that will be replaced.

Electrical System - parts are on route.

Tyres - Probably next year now.

Repaint may be brought up the schedule as there is a slight leak from the fuel tank now Rolling Eyes

Which was funny because it was running like a total dog and leaking oil everywhere Laughing

Pete had very kindly repaired the rocker cover for it (I think it is in this thread). He also skimmed as it wasn't very flat After this is told me I'd have to recheck the valve clearances as because of the skim the rocker will be lower. I gave the cover back to dad who fitted them. 'Make sure you check the clearances' I told him. 'Yeah, yeah, yeah' he replied...

I think the next time it went for a run was the this bike day at the pub. 'Is the bike ready to go?' I asked, 'Were the clearances ok?' 'yeah, yeah, yeah'... I set out and after a few miles the bike was running very badly, it barely got over the dartford bridge. It was also pissing out oil from the oilways to the head.

Pete offered to anneal the copper washers for me, as it was clear dad he reused the old ones despite having loads of new ones in the garage, but it still leaked. After asking on a forum it turns out those oilways should be done up to a pretty high torque. I can't remember what it was but I felt uncomfortable doing it. I thought I would snap the rocker cover casing, however this sorted the leak.

After googling the poor running issue the definitive answer seemed to be tight clearances. 'Are you SURE you checked the clearances?' I asked him 'errrrrr' was his reply Rolling Eyes 20 minutes later I had adjusted the clearances from 0 and it was running fine!

Later the engine was rebuilt, not by us as neither of us has the knowledge or experience, I think this would have been early 2016. Not long after that it something went wrong with the oil pump and it looked like a ground based version of the red arrows. I don't know what went wrong, dad told me essentially the oil pressure went through the roof and ruined various seals. He took this back to the same people to fix that and it ran fine for quite a while. He was out on it regularly. I think he has done about 6,000 miles on it since I started the project, a fair bit for an old bike.

I took her out for a spin a few months ago and the motor seemed great, I think it was the first time I'd ridden it properly since the engine rebuild. It was so much stronger and smoother than before. However the running gear needed some TLC. The back end felt 'wrong' to me, at my first stop I quickly found the swingarm pivot was shagged. I assume it just needs new bearings. The back brake also seemed weaker than I remember. The front and back used to be roughly on par for stopping power, it was nowhere near. It has also blown a fork seal, (I have a feeling the fork leg is slightly pitted).

I told dad I'd have a look and help him sort out the problems, a couple of weeks later he was riding it and the engine packed up it would seem oil is getting into one of the bores and has fouled the plug. I said I'd whip the top end off and have a look. It was about this time started to take more of an interest in his CX, thus it has been shelved for a while at least until that is finished.

My Dad is a bit 'funny' he can get an idea in his head and it will stick, like where this project started it was convinced the top end was knackered and couldn't get the motivation to do anything with it until I did it behind his back. After finishing my part of the project I hinted about doing the same to his CX while he was away one week. But he was adamant he didn't want anything done to it. I think the only reason the CX is moving forward is because he has lost heart with the Trophy.

I'm hoping the Trophy is a simplish fix (valve stem seals maybe). The trouble with it is my experience is working on more modern bikes and I've never opened up an engine (baring clutch/Generator).

Despite being simplier old bikes seem to have a lot more quirks and less clear knowledge about what is correct. The fact this is a bike of a BITSA doesn't help either. It also require arcane tools (imperial not bought on a credit card and left outside on the pavement) which we have less of, whats worse it has different flavours of imperial, it was built at a time when triumph were switching from one type of imperial to another (Witworth to BA?).

I'm nervous of opening it up myself as I'm not confident I know what I'm doing. I know I can rebuild the forks and the suspension pivot without issue and while I'm not certain I can do anything with the rear brake I'm confident and I strip it and put it back together again without drama. I'll have to bite the bullet and just do it one day. However that will be after the CX is back in one piece.

It'll be valuable experience for when I start my own long term project in the next few years, A TRX with a tuned 900 engine. I have the Engine and once my garage is built next year, I'll start the strip down.

Stripping down to get to the valve guides will be a doddle. Not done that engine but have done a few air cooled car and bike now .

Just buy a valve spring compressor (theres a cheap one from Machine Mart by Draper that will do the job). Have lots of bags that you can write on handy and make sure you photograph/note down everything. As it's only air/oil cooled I'd just take the engine out and pop it on the bench (assuming you have one).

Once all done just take the head to a specialist and get them to machine up what you need. failing that just take the engine in as a whole.

I use these guys https://www.southernengines.co.uk/contact-ses.html. Little bit away from you but not too far. Always had good results.

Photos. Shitloads of photos as you delve deeper. Nothing worse than that, 'oh shit where did this bit go?' moment.

And props for what you've done, got me right in the feels watching yer dad's reaction that did.

It's his bike, I do the work when I have time because I enjoy it. I can't remember exactly why he refitted the cover probably because he is retired and I have to work. Laughing

I have a ton of mixed imperial spanners in a bag that you're more than welcome to borrow if you need. I have them for a very slow rebuild of a 60's rover, but the job is on hold until the owner buys an engine, so won't be needed for a while.

So I convinced my dad to let me and my mate Steve (has been to ribs and wings a few times and helped me with this project to start with.) Drag the bike off to his garage and Start trying to sort it out. I'll apologise right now I didn't take enough photos.

Current problems,

Blown Forkseal
Swingarm play
Bike Cuts out when it leans Right.
Bike oiling up RHS Plug.

I forgot how much of a ball ache this bike is to work on.

Unlike modern bikes where more often than not if you wish to undo a bolt usually it is threaded into the engine/frame whatever and is a simple case of using the metric socket or allen key to simply undoing what you need to, with this everything is built with nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts from several different arcane standards, even a couple of metric ones have been thrown in for good measure.

I remember when looking in the manual for the bike it gave a warning that the factory where in the process of switching from 2 standards, (Withworth to AF?) SO to expect to fine both on the bike. That coupled with the fact it is 50 years old. Make it a total nightmare.

I also assume sockets and ratchets were not around/commonplace back then as so many bolts are in such close proximity other other things that you cant fact a socket on them.

TL;DR,

For every bolt you have to undo, you have to fine the right size by trial and error, not point reading the size of the spanner that was slightly too big/small because chances are it is the wrong standard

E.g.

You try a 1/4 AF spanner on a bolt, it is way too small, to try loads of others and eventually find one that is slightly too big you check the size 1/4 whitworth, eventually you find the Correct spanner, 1/4 BS. Now you have to find another to get on the nut that is next to impossible to access on the other side. Laughing

We found 9/16ths in various formats generally fit. Laughing

Anyway Steve started stripping the bike while I watched the MotoGP. I came round after to help.

I noticed that when the work was done a Brace had been added to the top of the engine.

This wasn't here last time I worked on the bike!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170702_143924_zpsw9m7p5sy.jpg

It seems to be impossible to remove without dropping the engine, if you lift it up it fowls on the frame. I'm thinking of cutting it and re making it with welded plate of the top and a couple of bolts in the middle so you can remove it in situe but I'm hoping someone will point out something stupid, we have missed.

We can see oil on the inlet valve from the inlet so I'm hoping it is just the valve guide.

Steve did a compression test and got 190PSI when warm on both cylinders however when cold the right was a lot lower 130ish I think he said.

Anyway the Brace has stopped that progress for the moment.

On to the swingarm, this is what the real fun and games begin. Anyone who has removed a swingarm on a modern bike will know it isn't too difficult. usually after you have removed the rear wheel and brake it is only 2 bolts, the pivot from the frame and the pivot through the shock. No simple on this bike.

Remove the rear wheel, and the brake linkage then remove these engine/footrest plates.

Each had 5 nuts and bolts with limited access to the other side

[/img]

I remember these plates being a nightmare to remove, it's seems silly but they are just incredibly fiddly, took the pair of us about an hour to remove them Rolling Eyes

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170702_163736_zpsdicha2pc.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170702_162021_zpsbqdl29iw.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170702_163750_zpsmifrwbac.jpg

All the bushing on the swingarm seem fine and the play is all side to side so I think we are going to Shim it. I'm asking the Oracles at the Birt bike forum if there is another solution.

That's where we left it current plans are to clean up some of the rusty bolts then oil quench them and put the rear end back together. Drop a lot of the manky bracketry off with dad for him to Hammerite.
Work out how to get the engine brace off. Take the head off and check the valve guides. See about rebuilding the forks again probably with new stantions.

I've done this with casings before, just make sure it's done in a 'window of opportunity' when the wife is out and there is no incriminating evidence.

Steve has been cracking on without me, I've been really busy the last couple of weeks.

He sent me these photos he'll be on soon I imagine to fill in the blanks.

Steve got the Head Steady off by loosening the engine mounts and tilting the engine.

It seems like the RHS valve is loose and the the LHS guide is on the limit.

I find it strange it is the RHS head is oily and that is the side that is fouling plugs but the LHS Piston top and Valve looks mankier.

The In guides look newer however they are different shapes and loose. I thought this was done with the engine rebuild Rolling Eyes .
